The Macallan 12 Year
The Macallan // Highlands, Scotland
The Macallan invests an exorbitant amount each year into the wood in which they age their whiskies. In their case, it is predominately European Sherry casks (almost always Oloroso Sherry). This lends dried fruits and nuts to a whisky and as the European oak is porous and tannic, it allows the whisky to soak up flavors from the wood. The majority of their barrels are 1st fill which will mean even more color and flavors are picked up.
Single MaltDistilled in pot stills from 100% malted barley, produced at one distillery, aged in barrels; if Scotch or Irish, must be aged for at least three years.
Cask TypeEuropean Sherry
"The color is a medium amber color with a slight greenish hue, common in sherry'd whisky. Fruity aromas and a soft, creamy texture are quite inviting. More fruit, marcona almonds, fresh orange zest, and baking spices are on the palate. The Macallan 12 is quite the gateway drug for new Scotch drinkers."
