My first gin. This is how it all begins. This reminds me of a book my daughter used to read called "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie...". One thing leads to another, and it's escalated 10 fold. Back in college, you start with your first beer. In no time at all, you're then sipping locally made craft beer from organic farm-to-table ingredients. Then, you have your first wine. Soon enough, you're sipping Willamette Valley Pinot Noirs, talking about differences in vintages and terroir. Then, you get your first taste of whiskey. Before you know it, you're hoarding Karuizawas, Hanyus, and Broras hoping that you'll soon open it (or sell it). You then up the game to mezcal. Before you know it, you're standing in the middle of some dusty Oaxacan village sipping freshly barreled mezcal while petting Chico, that sleepy-eyed donkey pulling the stone wheel grinding the agave hearts. Yup. That's how it all starts. So...now it's gin. Thanks to GeologyJack, I had my very first gin. I'm not going to rate it, since I have no idea if it's good or bad...but...yeah, I liked it. Felt like sucking on a pine needle while walking through cool mountain air. Thanks GeologyJack! Would I buy a bottle? No. Because as much as I liked it, just like "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie", I'll then soon be looking at a Christmas tree wondering what it'll taste like distilled as gin.

@Geology: yeah...I'd avoid Chico. Friendly as he is...he doesnt' smell all that good... ;-)
Pranay - turnabout is fair play! You have me looking all over for mezcals now although I don't think I'll cross paths with Chico anytime soon. Gins are popping up all over as micro distillers are keeping up their cash flow while waiting for their whiskies to age. And the taste spectrum is very wide. Great time to be exploring the little guys.
Reverend: sounds good! hit me up when you're settled in. I'll send over a few samples that I have too
Welcome to the Dark Side! I'm hoping to start riding the sample-sharing train once we're unpacked and settled here...once that happens, I've got a couple of unique gins I can send your way. One is Wisconsin produced and nails the North Woods kind of terroir; the other is from Argentina and prominently features yerba mate, peppermint, and pink grapefruit.
Nice..thanks Paul. Round 3 bonus
I'm not much of a gin man myself either, but I can appreciate it for what it is. I may just send you a sample of a Michigan gin that I have that is very drinkable in my not at all experienced opinion
Thanks Jason. I'll give the smaller sizes a shot...good way to experiment, with minimal risks of adding one more liquor to the growing list.
Uh oh, so it begins! The great thing about gin, in contrast to whiskey, is you can find a lot of miniatures that let you sample the most common but still very high-quality gins (Bombay Sapphire, Tanqueray, Hendricks, Beefeater's), so you can get a good sense quickly and cheaply for what gins are like. Definitely try The Botanist, which is an Islay gin made by Bruichladdich -- a nice connection between the scotch hobby and gin drinking, and it just happens to be a spectacular gin.
