Nikka Taketsuru 17 Year Pure Malt
Blended Malt — Japan

Today I decided to try another japanese heavy weight. The Nikka Taketsuro line has rather good ratings all around, and the 17 was my choice of poison, so to speak.
The nose is actually rather disappointing. Pear and some spice, and done. At least for me. Not a bad nose, but somehow I expected...more. The taste on the other hand...
Well, this is where this whisky shines. It starts with a spicy sweetness, supported by honey drizzled grilled apples that give it a delicious sweet note, combined with the herbal and smoky peat layers. Each sip is a journey from fruity sweetness to spicy earthiness that finishes with a bit of honey charred fruits.
A very enjoyable whisky, and definatly a main actor on the stage. Don't even try to drink this whils doing something else, it deserves your full attention.

@Slainte-Mhath - yes, I agree. Just scored 3 yamazaki 12 for $95 per. Also, 2 each Nikka Taketsuru 21 & 17 for $199 and $169, respectively. Deals are out there if you look under enough rocks. And, yes, I do drink a little with about 40 open bottles currently. :)
@Reverend357 "the only way a bottle leaves my collection is empty". Hear hear!
Ripe Banana? Now we're talking! Although I remember not liking the 12.... I got a bottle of the Distiller's Reserve here, that's supposed to be pretty nice. I also still have a couple japanese samples to try...Yamazaki 18 being one of them...plus, all those impulse buy bottles (yeah I caved in today and got a bottle of A'Bunadh...)
@Slainte-Mhath. I was never fond of the Yamasaki 12...thought it was too ripe banana taste for me. If you’re a fan of it, you’re right...95€ isn’t bad.
Prices of Hibiki 17 and 21 are skyrocketing after Suntory's announcement to discontinue the 17 and Hakushu 12. I'd rather invest in a bottle of Yamazaki 12 (currently at 95€). Rumour has it that this malt could be the next to be discontinued. Buy while you still can!
@Reverend357 my sentiments exactly. I just opened up my Hibiki 21 back in November. Shared with a few friends
@PBMichiganWolverine yeah I didn't mean as "investment", more like "Imma gonna get me a nice damn bottle to drink". the only way a bottle leaves my collection is empty^^
@Reverend357. Nah...at that price, not an investment anymore. More like a depreciating asset
@PBMichiganWolverine well...the 21 is around 520....and I do get my summer bonus in about 3 weeks....wanted to get my custom revolver project started, but maybe I'll invest in the 21 instead....
@Reverend357 yeah..that’s too expensive. But if you like the 17, you’ll love the Hibiki 21
@PBMichiganWolverine not as much, currently around 180€. I got a sample from master of malt, not buying a bottle for that price. Was considering to get a bottle of the Hibiki 17 because that's probably the best whisky I ever tasted, but those went from 350 to 800....yeah, no.
@LeeEvolved. So not worth it. Even the Yamasaki 18, which is probably my personal top 3 favorite, is silly price—-close to $500.
@PBMichiganWolverine - you and your discount cellar haha. A quick search sees them going for $250-300. Yikes.
@LeeEvolved yeah...I’d take you up on it if I didn’t already have one from 2012 that I got for $50. 😁
@PBMichiganWolverine - I’m sure it has. But I’ll sell you my bottle for $25 lower than the best price you find. Haha
@Reverend357. Has this gone up to silly prices as well?
