Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey

Other Liqueurs — Tennessee, USA

Reviewed July 26, 2018 (edited October 7, 2018)

1.0 out of 5 stars
Nose: Alrighty! Well right off the bat there is some funk in the smell; it's similar to car exhaust. I let it breathe for a minute and it's a little better. Do you know what? Though it isn't necessarily bad I get the banana smell I usually find in Jack. However, that banana mixes pretty well with the obvious honey smell and a present oat cereal note, making me think of a breakfast of baked oatmeal with sliced banana and honey. That exhaust funk still lingers, but if I focus on my breakfast I'm okay. Taste: The palate is pretty light and bland besides some vanilla notes but then the finish takes all the honey sweetness you expected and slowly tapers off. Opinion: So I felt obliged to give this honey flavored whiskey a try since I did so for a couple of its peers, and in my opinion they both were better than this dram. I really don't think it's worth it. I'm not purchasing it again. Sorry Jack. Cheers!

@MountainRoot. If I had a $100 to spare, I’d say I’d buy any of one these: Compass Box core range ( Great King st, Peat Monster, or Oak Cross), Talisker 10, Ardbeg core range ( Uigi, Correy, 10), Macallan Edition 3, Lagavulin 8 or 16, or Laphroag 10. Then there’s American beauties too—Westland, or Stranahan. If not whiskey, bourbon: Elijah Craig cask strength, Four Roses variants ( OESB, etc), Garrison Brothers, or Jack Daniels Single Barrel Cask Strength. Sorry—that last one is a whiskey. If I had $50...I’d skip all of these and go get some amazing Oregon pinot, Argentina’s Malbec, or Italian Montepulciano

Man, what can you get for under $100 that’s good? That’s a tall order- there’s tons of great stuff in the $75-90 range, especially if you like peat. Some great Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig. Unpeated- GlenDronach, Tomatin and a handful of Macallan can be had. Heck, you can get most Tomatin for $45-55. I’d start there. Look for the different finishing cask 14 year olds from Tomatin: Port Cask, French Oak or the Cu Bocan.

The way I see it, @Generously_Paul is like this: you know how there's the book and then there's the movie, and typically the book is better than the movie? When you read the book first, you have little appreciation for the movie because, "The book was way better." But if you watch the movie first you like it, then if you read the book you enjoy that even more! But, you still appreciate them both. I am sort of attempting to do that with my palate. I want to try and appreciate the "movies" (average stuff) and then read the "books" (schwing!) so I can have a healthy appreciation for both and be able to recommend any number of things to whomever I'm trying to corrupt and get them into whiskey. ;) @PBMichiganWolverine Yes, it's basically just like that! Thank you! @LeeEvolved, *thumbs up and nods approval* Tell me guys, what are your favorites under $100 that I should add to my list? I respect all of your opinions and like reading your reviews, thanks!

@PBMichiganWolverine - They all get crazy eventually. The smart ones just do a better job of hiding it for a while. Only kidding honey! :)

@Generously_Paul - I learned about Fireball from you. I didn’t even know what it was until you drunk-texted me a pic of you doing shots on the Fourth of July. I BLAME YOU!

@Generously_Paul. I don’t know...I think @MountainRoot is on to something. It’s like back in college...when you start to take for granted the smart beautiful woman you’re dating. You should pause and date the nut jobs. Makes you appreciate what you had.

Seriously, stop wasting your money and liver and time on these flavored whiskies. Up your game and do your palate a favor. Once you get a taste of the finer drams you won’t go back...unless your name is @LeeEvolved and you have a bottle of Fireball in front of you
