Cardrona Just Hatched Ex-Bourbon

Single Malt — New Zealand

Reviewed December 9, 2018 (edited December 20, 2018)
3.25
3.25 out of 5 stars
The second of Cardona distilleries two offerings. The bourbon effort I found sadly lacking. Very light and delicate...I had to really drown the thing to get anything out of it. It was 66.7% however which is I think the highest % non-bourbon whiskey I've had I think. Sweetness, hint of vanilla but did struggle to make a dent in my palate. I did try this after the newest Longrow cask strength 14 year old Sherry wood which has just hit the market and before that 15 yr Springbank, the Sanaig and the Balvenie Caribbean cask so maybe one for trying first with water.  I really can't give it more than a 3.25 though.

@Soba45 @LeeEvolved @PBMichiganWolverine @dubz480 @worldwhiskies95 Congrats on the awards. Distiller wouldn't be the same without postcards from the Uncle Travelling Matts of the whiskey world.

@Soba45 @PBMichiganWolverine @LeeEvolved Congrats on winning the Distiller Awards, it's been a joy to follow you throughout the year. I'd like to be more active on this wonderful site, but my administrative work at Whiskybase keeps me too busy to post more than 2-3 reviews a month. Looking forward to new discussions and great whisky tastings in 2019!

@PBMichiganWolverine True. A boat takes 3 months or so so as long as we give him enough notice :-)

@Joe_C Cheers. You did the heavy lifting whiskey review wise last year. Once the union stuff is sorted hopefully you have time to get stuck in again :-)

@PBMichiganWolverine @LeeEvolved Cheers guys. I thought I'd go for quantity over quality for my reviews this year...haha. I think the 80 I ploughed through in 2 days at Dramfest set me up for the year and the Last Word Bar and MoM carried me down the home straight..haha :-). Congrats on your guys awards its been a great year conversing with you both and the rest of the gang. We should aim for an in person meet up sometime in the 2020's in the spiritual home of whiskey- Scotland!

@Soba45 - most tastes and most added bottles. That IS impressive! Cheers. @PBMichiganWolverine - back to back title defense of being the chatty-est mofo on the Internet is very cool, too.

@PBMichiganWolverine In a minor way :-). Sadly overpriced and nothing special from what I've tasted

NZ is getting back? Wondering what took them so long, especially since the old Willowbank closed ages ago and sold off their stuff to Fiji
