Nose: First hit is of raisin and fig with some spice. As the rum rests, the spice goes away and hints of caramel and banana bread surface. Despite having the smell of lots of sweet elements (caramel, banana, raisin, fig) it does not give off many sugary or sweet notes, just the other properties of each item. Body: On the lighter-medium bodied side with a slight oily texture. True to it's 7 year age statement. Little to no burn, dry finish. Taste: Semi-sweet plum with a winey backdrop. Some sweet wood and fig combatted by a mild leather. Again, some items with sweet properties but no prevalent sweetness. Spectacular balance. The finish is dry and leaves a touch of ash on the palette. Overall: 5 stars for balance. Interesting and balanced enough that it could be enjoyed neat or as a premium mix. The lack of age and complexity hold it back from being a true sipper, but a versatile staple rum to have in the bar. Also great to use as a benchmark rum to compare against lighter/sweeter rums to older/bolder varieties.
