I can’t believe I’m sitting through this crap. This is some bourgeoise shit. Not the whisky...I’ll get to that. This gender reveal party I’m currently in attendance, much to my chagrin. Have you ever been to a gender reveal party? Anyone care besides the parents? This one has a cake that when cut will show either a blue or pink inside. WTF!? My mom had me when she was 17. I’m sure there was no gender reveal party. Maybe just “WTF! You didn’t use protection!?!” Anyway, fast forward a few hours from this evening’s gender reveal party to now. After sitting through that bourgeoise crap, I had to have something that oozed ruggedness with spartan muscle. Perfect time to crack open a pour of 2017 Lagavulin Distiller’s, courtesy of @LeeEvolved. On the nose: Earthy, sea-ravaged ropes, hard mineral quality. Palate: thick, oily and viscous. Oceanic, smoked...maybe herrings. Just what one needs after a long week further elongated by a freakin’ gender party. Not that I care...but the cake insides were pink.

@Generously_Paul... “autofellacio” - ha!
Haha love the comments. I'm with cascode I thought it was a LGBT reveal at first. We were asked at the scans do we want to know I'm like why not....never was one of those 'Nooo don't tell me for 6 months..'
@PBMichiganWolverine - yes, I wrote a review of the LDE based on a 2016 bottle. My favorite bottle and my favorite review. :)
@Generously_Paul - Among other things, yes indeed.
@Clarkebar To quote G. Michael Hopf...”Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times”. I believe we are currently in the “good times create weak men” phase. Hard times ahead unfortunately. Better stockpile the good whisky
@PBMichiganWolverine, @Generously_Paul - Perfect descriptives of a generation lost in so many ways. History tends to show us the only corrective is a war, unfortunately. Hey, let's all think good thoughts.
@cascode your version sounds more fun
@PBMichiganWolverine I am on the same page as you in regards to these reveal parties. Instant gratification, a common theme amongst the young(er). A nice dram to break from the zaniness.
I'm elated to report that I had never heard of a gender reveal party until this moment. At first I thought it must be a party where you invite all your LGBT friends plus your parents "Hay dad, GUESS WHAT!". Then I figured it out, but reality sounds like much less fun.
@Rick_M just saw my previous notes—was a 2014 version
@Rick_M did you have any from previous years? I had one a few years back, and I recall falling in love with that one. What I don’t know is if my palette has simply become too jaded or if there’s a itsy bitzy decline in quality.
@PBMichiganWolverine - recently opened a 2017 LDE and it thought it was the finest glass of whisky of my entire life, and that’s a long time. No gender reveals in my day till you got home from the hospital and mom ripped off a cloth diaper.
@Clarkebar can’t go wrong with a Lag. I think out of all the distilleries I’ve tasted, the only ones that consistently got 4 or 5 stars were Yamazaki, Springbank, and Lagavulin. Ardbeg has a few misses. And Highland Park needs to stop with the Viking pillaging marketing bullshit.
@Generously_Paul amen. But I think it’s going to become a thing. It’s the Instagram culture. Instagrams of food, selfies of where they are and with whom, etc
@Richard-ModernDrinking see now that’s cool. I should’ve done that when we had ours. Instead...was just pizza and beer.
@worldwhiskies95 yes to both
@LeeEvolved. Whatever happened to the baby showers? I was a huge fan of that because I didn’t need to show up. I’d go to Buffalo Wild Wings and have wings and beer instead. Well...thank god it was yesterday and not today. It would’ve interfered with the playoffs
@The_Rev you can’t go wrong with a Lag. It’s one of the few that’s either a 4 or 5 stars. Heck...Dave Broom just have a 92/100 for the Lag GoT...That’ll make it fly off the shelves now
Thankfully I’ve never been invited to a reveal party. Hopefully never will. What a load of self indulgent millennial autofellacio. Thanks @LeeEvolved for providing this man with the manly whisky needed to recover from such foolishness
Hahaha @ boogie shit
My parents had a whisky cask instead of a cake that when tapped would reveal a creamy bourbon finish for a girl or a sulphurous sherry for a boy. By all accounts it was very pungent.
Does this taste more smoky or more sweet?
My sincerest condolences...on your lost time. You will never get it back but the D.E. is certainly a fine reward for your sacrifice.
Uh, at least it wasn’t a gender neutral reveal party. “we’d like you all to start referring to our child as ‘Sam’- which is short for....”. Probably won’t be whisky there after, though- just kale juice. Sigh. I feel like those will become a “thing” within the next few years. Eye roll.
I was incredibly grateful that my wife thinks those things are as ridiculous as I do...at least there was some quality whisky on the other side. I think the last Laga DE I had was the 2015 (or 2014?); either way, it was delicious stuff.
