Powers John's Lane Release 12 Year
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed
January 29, 2019 (edited April 29, 2019)
The original Powers Distillery was located on John's Lane just off Thomas Street - in Dublin's Liberties (where the best whiskey was invented). This whiskey matured in ex-bourbon barrels and finished off for a small amount of time in ex-sherry casks.
Nose - Distinct cocoa and mocha overtones with hints of dried apricots, orange peel and marshmallow.
Taste - Soft and smooth. Crisp and spicy - element of bittersweet fruit, marmalade and toffee apples. Velvety texture
Finish - Chocolatey with some dusty oakiness
Best whiskety Powers has top offer. I bought on recommendation of fine bar man in Peruke & Periwig bar, Dublin, having spent a lonely afternoon there with my missus.

@1901 Yes that’s a true story. The guys died from drinking pure alcohol, as the barrels burnt the whiskey flowed. Have a read - https://www.irishtimes.com/news/offbeat/the-night-a-river-of-whiskey-ran-through-the-streets-of-dublin-1.2743517?mode=amp
I know the are fairly well - I worked close to John’s Lane for a year or more. The Liberties area of Dublin is growing again to be the whiskey district it was a couple of centuries ago. I heard an interesting story on an Irish historical documentary about the Liberties that was on TV recently. In 1875 there was the “Great Whiskey Fire” where a warehouse with over 5000 barrels caught fire. In all, 13 people were reported to have died as a result of the fire. None of those deaths were caused by flames or by smoke inhalation - each was due to alcohol poisoning from drinking from streams of whiskey flowing through the nearby streets.
@1901 Love this whiskey - Johns Lane is in the heart of old Dublin and was the site of the old Powers distillery. My wife’s family are from one road away - the history and the quality make it a special whiskey. Tony
I agree this is the top Powers. Big fan of this too!
