Irish whiskey tasting, The Oak Barrel, Sydney, 7 Feb 2019. Whisky #4
Nose: Dried fruit, toasted cereal grains, roasted almonds, a little vanilla, leather, and a dark floral sweetness reminiscent of apricot liqueur.
Palate: Full, rich arrival with abounding malty flavours - dark honey, slightly bitter syrup, apple, walnut. There's a firm tannic note from the oak but it's balanced by some vanilla and a dark treacle flavour. The texture is medium-bodied and very agreeable.
Finish: Medium. A pleasant fruity grainy quality with a nutty aftertaste.
The nose is less flowery-floral than some Irish whiskey, with the malted grain providing an earthy depth. It's a complex whiskey that is nonetheless easy to drink, with a nuanced balance between sweet cereal and dry oak notes. It has a resolute and uncompromising profile similar to Balblair.
Very enjoyable neat, and a dash of water brings out further sweetness, if that is your preference, without unbalancing the profile. The distillate was sourced from Midleton and maturation was in ex-bourbon barrels followed by finishing in Limousin oak casks. An enjoyable and interesting whiskey that is well worth the asking price.

@Slainte-Mhath That is an exceptionally good price for any M&M expression - looking forward to the review. I've enjoyed them all (particularly the Single Pot Still matured in Chestnut casks) but I like what Midleton is doing with all their experimental series. I'll be in Ireland in May this year and I'm hoping to visit Midleton and Waterford distilleries whilst there.
@cascode I am sipping Method and Madness at the moment. Vinmonopolet had discounted the bottle to 35 €, which is a steal considering its quality. I am pretty impressed with it, it will be my next review.
@Soba45 oh you’re right...I was thinking Kelpie. I thought that was Hungarian. Either way, that oak elevated the regular Ardbeg
@PBMichiganWolverine Ah no I missed that one. Dark Cove last year was regular bourbon sherry casking I thought and Kelpie was Russian oak finished which I LOVED. Was there another one..?
@Soba45 did you try last year’s Ardbeg that was finished in Hungarian oak? Added a bit of spicy kick to it. Seems like that oak would marry really well with Irish
Good review :-). They have a version finished in Hungarian oak I'd love to try. Sadly the range generally just doesn't do samples.
