It has a funky overripe corn smell, which lingers as you continue to drink it. I tried this neat side by side with some Knob Creek small batch. The Knob Creek had a sweeter smell, but I feel that the old grand-dad bonded was a bit spicier. All things considered, I like the Old Grand-dad. It's a good budget bourbon, especially being bonded and at 100 proof. I'm glad I tried it; not sure if I'll get it again. I have to work my way through the rest of the bottle first.
5/8/19 follow up taste: took the last pour from the bottle tonight. I’ve gotta admit that this has grown on me. I think time and some air has been good for this one. I still get corn as a predominant taste, but I retract the overripe comment. This is robust, a good bottle to have on hand, and a solid value. I wouldn’t mind this as my daily drinker, although I’m still partial to Knob Creek. I will buy this again, but first I’ve got to complete the family and try OGD 114. Cheers!

The Old Grand Dad is indeed a Beam distillate so has a bit in common with the Knob.
@BDanner - thanks! OGD 114 is on my lists to try. I’m looking forward to it.
The 114 is a big step up from this.
