Oh this is good. Dirty good. It’s like that girl in chemistry class. She had her hair up. Glasses. Sweater and long skirt. Usually you saw her in lab, wearing those lab goggles and lab coat. One fine evening, she’s at a University of Michigan party. Unrecognizable...hair down, no glasses, T-shirt and shorts. Polar opposite than the young woman pipetting in lab.
That’s this Balvenie. I normally associate Balvenie as mild, heather scented, and pretty straight and narrow. Not this Balvenie. It’s sooty, dirty. The aroma is like charcoal, moves to mossy taste, like wet earth, but with the sweet backbone. The heather character is still at its center and part of the Balvenie DNA, but the sooty makeover really makes it shine. Highly recommended. Thanks @LeeEvolved for this pour!

This stuff is awesome....and different from the Islay crowd
@PBMichiganWolverine sounds like the Hot For Teacher video from Van Halen. You have a way to provide anecdotal reviews. Always fun to read. Best of Balvenie: Peat Week.
@Whiskey_Hound - yeah, the Week of Peat can be had out of the UK for less than $70, which in terms of Balvenie, is a good price. The Sweet Toast of the Oak is a 12 year for less than $50. It seems like Balvenie are coming up with aged releases that enable them to lower the price point- something more than a few people having been asking for. I’m certainly more likely to buy both now- it’s just a matter of when I place another international order.
Great review! @LeeEvolved I've seen that and the new 12 year--Sweet American Oak (or something to that affect) on shelves. I'm guessing Balvenie wanted to add its annual release portfolio and decided to just make the Peat Week a part of that lineup rather than keeping it as a separate entity. Just a hunch based on how similar the packaging is with the two new releases; I haven't done my research. I'm
@PBMichiganWolverine I love both those places. Great tours and tasting rooms if you can get out here. Garrison Bros is out on a ranch in the hill country, and Balcones has all these cool experimental and exclusive finishes in their tasting room.
@WhiskeyLonghorn. Nice! I did my Chem Eng at Michigan and then MBA there. Texas has been making some good whiskey—-Balcones and Garrison Brothers especially. Garrison has a release called Cowboy bourbon, which is really good
@PBMichiganWolverine ya it’s UT. Did masters at Michigan in education. Working on PhD in Texas now. Lots of tasty Texas whiskies to try while I’m here.
@WhiskeyLonghorn sorry typo below—-wrote WhiskeyHound instead of @WhiskeyLonghorn . ( is that UofT? )
@Whiskey_Hound I actually thought it was worth the cost ($90 where I am). Yes—you can find peatier in Islay, or sootier in Cambeltown, and saltier in Islands....but this has the heather sweetness + earthy peaty (which is very different than Islay medicinal high phenol peaty). It’s different enough to warrant a purchase. I have the 2002 one, which I think is less peaty than this 2003 one that Lee gave me. ( oh...thanks for the UofM reference...I went there...chemical engineering major, so story based on experiences ☺️ )
Also, I like the U of M reference in the review. Go Blue!
Great review! Certainly sounds like a tasty pour. Do you feel like for what it costs that it’s worth it co later to other similarly aged peated malts?
@LeeEvolved wondering if there was a label trademark issue with the US. Westland has a Peat Week as well.
I’ve seen that this year’s release is out and I think it’s officially been renamed ‘The Week of Peat’. I don’t really get the reason for the name change, though. If I place another international order I may go ahead and add a bottle.
@PBMichiganWolverine Done deal. That and the new American Oak release from Balvenie I have had my eye on
@dubz480 dude, get it...you won’t be disappointed
I think I am sold. I am picking a bottle up tomorrow. My local has 2 in stock for $90. Great review as always!
