I feel like this gets overlooked some because it’s sooooo readily available. But I think this is a nice scotch that serves up as a gateway to more aggressive drinks...while still being accessible.
The nose is delightful, with hints of smoke popping in with a creamy vanilla. Both those elements are easy to find on the taste, but you also get some lemon zest and pepper. A touch of peat, earth notes as well.
The finish is pretty quick given the ABV. But man, there’s nothing wrong with this...and I can often find it for less than $30.
Good value drink imo.
87 overall.

@BDanner ahh in that case, I think your instinct is right, seems perfect to keep on hand
@bson ...and I’ll be honest, as a novice to whiskey, I expected all Scotch to be smoky. I was surprised by the light, delicate flavor of some Single Malts.
@bson casual as in, “I don’t drink a lot of whiskey, but I know that both of those products are a step up from their big branded brethren “.
@BDanner How casual is casual? I ask because I was working my way through Glenlivet, Glenmorangie, Glenfiddich when I got to JW Black...and I liked it, but the smoke was a tad challenging at the time.
Nice review. I've struggled with what whiskies to keep on hand for casual drinkers that is nice, but not so challenging or complex that they would be turned off by it. I've decided that those two whiskies are going to be Johnnie Black and Maker's 46. Two nicer step-up whiskies that would suit most every palate.
