Woodford Reserve Wheat Whiskey
Pours into my Glencairn a slight reddish hue (or is it just subliminal from the red label?). A quick swirl yields fast moving skinny legs.
NOSE: A definite floral note. Buttered Toast. Sugary Sweet Pink Bubblegum. Tropical Fruits mainly Banana and Coconut, Hay and Oak. There are light Rye Notes in the background as well.
NEAT: Crosses the front of the palate with Cherry Vanilla Coke sweetness. There is a vague fruitiness throughout. Banana? Cherry? Pear? All seem to be there, but none dominate. A touch of Black Pepper Spice and a healthy shot of Oak. The Malt notes show up on the warming finish with a taste reminiscent of Burnt Brownie Edges and Oak Tannins coating the palate. A Sweet Brown Sugary note really clings and lasts adding some more depth to the next sip.
SPLASH: Gives the nose a spicy character, and I swear the little bit of rye in the mash bill comes through in a light dill note. Accents the Spicy Oak and Vanilla on the palate. The nose on the empty glass is a dead ringer for Brown Sugar.
Verdict: Very good. A great example of a 4 grain whiskey where each grain contributes their own unique character. Different than Bernheim Wheat, but equally good. 4 Stars.

@QuinnDEskimo Yeah I've tasted a lot and I still need help. I find you can do two things. Get a sheet with all the descriptor flavours on so when you taste it's easier to match off or the cheat way I often do. Look at the official or other descriptions for the whiskey first and then taste and tick off the ones you notice.
@QuinnDEskimo honestly ...I’m kinda with you. Most of the times I dont get the notes either...I just really like whiskey notes or not
@BDanner I don’t mind the trial and error. Best part of this hobby. ;-)
@QuinnDEskimo I actually prefer the Rocks Glass for some. Woodford Double Oak is undrinkable to me in a glencairn, but I like it in a Rocks glass. Trial and Error.
@PBMichiganWolverine late to your responses.....I’ve tried the glencairn glass to no avail. I actually find if I were to actually identify smells and tastes I get more out of a rocks glass than a glencairn. I see the note of cherry in so many reviews and I have NEVER tasted anything that represents a cherry. The dickel 13 year BIB I get the Flinstone vitamin smell as others described and the peanuts (which I really enjoy both) but most whiskies I just can’t put a flavor on besides.......whiskey/bourbon/scotch. That’s as far as I can narrow them down. FYI I really like reading your reviews as well as the others in this comment thread.
@WhiskeyLonghorn I haven't had the rye, but of the Woodfords I've had so far...Malt, Wheat, then a tossup between Bourbon and Double Oak Bourbon. I'm not the biggest fan of Brown Foreman's bourbon profile. Just something there that disagrees with my palate, some days more than others.
@BDanner so now of the four Woodford “core” offerings, which order would you rank them in (out of the bourbon, rye, malt, and wheat)?
@BDanner likewise ...about time
@QuinnDEskimo try with a glencairn glass. You’d be surprised the aromas it pulls out
I wish I could get more of these offerings here in Colorado. Standard reply is not available here... smh
@BeppeCovfefe I’m loving these reasonably priced new expressions we’re getting this year!
@QuinnDEskimo "I don’t know how you guys pull flavors out like that. " many many long years of hard work, practice and experience, it's a true burdensome task but hey, somebody's gotta do it! :D cheers
and yet another bottle on my "must try" list, thanks sir!
@QuinnDEskimo A Glencairn glass & more practice than I care to admit. I’m right there with you. This is good stuff.
Good review. I don’t know how you guys pull flavors out like that. I’m more like “yea it’s good or nope it sucks”. This one was in the yea it’s good category for me.
review made me put this on my wishlist
