Daftmill 2006 Summer Batch Release (UK)

Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland

Reviewed January 5, 2020 (edited April 15, 2020)

Hmm I really should stop chasing whiskey unicorns real or imagined..some are great, others aren't but all are over priced. I think a bottle of this is something stupid like $300 USD here. I scored a sample of this for a measily $40USD after shipping and taxes and one compound word sums it up OVERPRICED. I'd be ok as a bog standard drink at $40USD a bottle but nearly ten times the price forget it. Dingle batch 2 was a 1/3rd of the price and at least a third better. Hard pass unless you like chasing overpriced unicorns.

@PBMichiganWolverine Yeesh, $250 is steep for sure. Given the small farm operation, I’d probably fork over $110-$120 for a bottle but double that is aggressive

@SolanaRoots I actually did a bottle split for that one. The US one is pricey at $220-250. Mine was from Wally’s in CA.

@PBMichiganWolverine Where did you find the Daftmill 2006 Summer Batch US release?

@PBMichiganWolverine Yeah hopefully that crazy bubble will burst soon but in the meantime still plenty of good stuff speculators haven't cornered:-)

@Soba45 regulations have eased here. So, the tax used to be $10/barrel ( I think..might be more). But for small players that produce below a certain amount, their tax is now barely $1.10/barrel

@Soba45 I paid $125 USD for that Winter release—anything higher would’ve been a strong pass. But it sold out in minutes, then going 2-3x in secondary

@Slainte-Mhath @cascode. Yeah I agree with both points. There is way too much out there to waste time on anything overpriced or average. I read there were now 2000 distilleries in the USA alone now!

@PBMichiganWolverine Yeah I really liked the story and their patience which in todays whiskey world is a rarity even for the long established players. The winter release seems to be rated higher but I won't be ponying up the $$ to find out (not that I can get hold of one anyway!)

Yup. Small-scale and artisinal does not necessarily mean good. I decided long ago to avoid the hoopla surrounding Daftmill. There are ten thousand other whiskies in the world to try.

@Slainte-Mhath @Soba45 what Daftmill has done is sheer brilliance—-they put out a 12 yr as the inaugural, producing in very small quantities only 2x/year, using only the barley grown on its farm, and keeping quality high. But anything over $150, in my opinion, is too much. I paid about $110 for three of their releases

@Soba45 $40 for one sample seems outrageous. I'd probably invest that sum into a Brora or PE (just to confirm that these drams are not worth so much money either), but Daftmill? Too much hype.

I liked Daftmill—-but not at the overpriced amounts it’s going for nowadays in secondary. If you can find for $100-150, then yes—-great bottle.
