I have been looking to pick up one of these old style label 18s for a good while. All the liquor stores in the area which have them want a pretty penny for them. I took a chance after work today to stop by an out of the way liquor store where I have previously found a couple interesting whiskies, what a surprise to see two of these old style HP18s sitting on the shelf at a very reasonable price. On top of that the clerk gave me a nice discount for buying both. I had to break one open right away.
Wow! What a fantastic whiskey. Best I have tasted so far. The nose is heavenly, the palate is like nectar of the gods, the finish is long, smokey, sherried and oh so satisfying.

@jdriip thanks. I found the newer bottle for $119 and really want to pull the trigger.
@WhiskeyLonghorn thanks. I’ll search for the review
@Generously_Paul i have a 12 from early 90s—-you’re right, the shape is totally different. More of a pear shape bottle
Getting these older versions is a nice find. The new 18s are not as good
@WhiskeyLonghorn cool, wish I could find that easily.
@jdriip I think @LeeEvolved reviewed the new bottling with some comparative notes.
@Andrew-Nguyen1 I can't tell you yes or no since I haven't tried the newer bottling yet, but there seems to be some anecdotal evidence that there is a difference.
Old bottle taste the same as the new?
@Generously_Paul now that would be interesting to know how that old bottle compares
Very encouraging, as I have a bottle of the 18 from a couple years before the switch to the Viking theme, and a bottle from the 90s that is a completely different shape
@Ctrexman I have yet to purchase the Viking version. it to will be interesting to compare the two.
I doubt Ill find a non viking edition of this but no matter I want to experience HP18
