nCV19 edition : opening up a top tier sample , cause...why not—-My family and I are still alive and virus free...for now.
This is different level stuff. This is the type of whisky that will be worth multiples of its current price in a few years. It’s a double maturation single cask—-so they took one cask which was matured in bourbon barrel for about 11 years, and then took that single cask and matured it in Oloroso for 10 more years. Whoever thought of that for this particular cask deserves a medal of some sort—-that cask selection was superb. Produced a total of 322 bottles.
Tabacco, linseed oil, pine...oysters, and finally you get an amazing sweet marmalade finish. I’ve had a lot of Islay, from young brutes to elegant older ones that are deeply complex, but this one is the best Islay I’ve ever had. Hands down.
Unfortunately I only had a 6cl sample. In retrospect, I wish I bought a bottle. If you see this—-buy on sight.
Addendum: the 1981 single cask oloroso Laphroaig 27 is about $5000. This came out at $400. Kicking myself for not buying this...

@Soba45 @Whiskey_Hound i did see this briefly on the TWE website, but the $400 price tag left me hesitant. ( $400 w/tariff). So, I passed. I came back 1/2 hour later, and all were gone. I have a feeling the secondary markets will have sky-high prices. Maybe next time—-I’m sure they’ll always come up with great bottles...except in this climate, might actually be affordable
"best Islay I've ever had" -@pbmichiganwolverine. I didn't know this existed until three minutes ago and now I've got to find a bottle
Woah I saw that and I had 2 thoughts 1) That sounds awesome 2) Please god let him be opening a whole bottle...haha. :-). Definitely going to be cracking a good sample open this weekend although not going to hard as both my wife and I are working from home and so the plan is I work some of this weekend and take more time off midweek to wrangle kids so she has a chance to get stuff done!
@Rick_M yeah, this was from the TWE whiskey show in February. I didn’t manage to get a bottle—-only 300 some odd bottles, and most were gone in the show. I was sent a pour from someone that attended the show
@PBMichiganWolverine - is this a Whisky Exchange exclusive? How long ago did you buy, since they don’t show it on their site?
@Richard-ModernDrinking yeah—-I couldn’t get a full bottle , sold out quickly. But I did manage to try a pour
Nice buy. Is this the one that just came out?
@PBMichiganWolverine so far so good. Long Island quickly exploding; people still shopping for non-necessities, imo (paint, easter goods, etc.). Not sure where their heads are at.
@Scott_E all safe in your household there Scott? You and I, along with @Richard-ModernDrinking, are in the epicenter
Well played. Nice selection tonight.
