Balcones Texas Single Malt Rum Cask Finished

American Single Malt — Texas, USA

Reviewed April 7, 2020 (edited June 29, 2020)
4.25
4.25 out of 5 stars
Rum casks usually turn out too sugary for my liking, but this one seems to have received just enough of a finish to add a toasty caramalized note without oversweetening the spirit. Diluted to about 50%, it makes for a nice desert whisky and a decent alternative to a sherry cask.

    @Richard-ModernDrinking oh boy! those picks are so great! Y’all’s blue corn whisky whole maturation in used tequila pick is a fabulous positively electric whisky. Excited for you to try that one! And the refill malt finished in apple brandy is really yummy as well! Cheers!

    @gabericharde Hey, nice to have you on here. This was a sample I got in a recent Drammers Club tasting and I’m looking forward to trying our own bottle picks.

    @PBMichiganWolverine we’ve done this expression each year over the last 5yrs or so. In the past it has been a distillery only exclusive however last year it was distributed in Texas, and this year it will be distributed in Texas again as well as a handful of major cities in other states.

    @Richard-ModernDrinking didnt think that far ahead, but one thing for sure...I’m not biking. I did a biking tour of the wineries in Loire valley ages ago. Really hard to bike while buzzed.

    @PBMichiganWolverine How many distilleries would you want to hit and who’s your designated driver?

    @jonwilkinson7309 one of my bucket list items is to drive across US, stop at every major distillery. That’s a long term goal...short term, as in next 30 days, is just get out of my house...

    Looks like it would be right up my ally. I'll have to see if i can get access to this somehow.

    @WhiskeyLonghorn I'm under the impression that Balcones has a number of distillery-only goodies. Next time I'm in central TX (whenever that may be) the Balcones Distillery is a must.

    @Richard-ModernDrinking @PBMichiganWolverine it was a distillery exclusive. Got to try it straight from the cask when I did the tour a year or so ago. Damn near thought it would burn my eyebrows off! Definitely one that benefits from a little water. Personally with Balcones single malt, I like their Mirador expression the most.

    @PBMichiganWolverine I think it’s a distillery exclusive

    Is this a new addition? Haven’t heard of it
