Lot No. 40 Canadian Rye
Canadian — Canada

Nose:
Rye spice first, fresh baked bread with a caramel or vanilla glaze. Toasted almonds.
Palate:
A hit of unique grainy rye flavor first. Oily mouthfeel. Less sweet than typical Canadian whiskies. Well balanced oak. Spice and slight bitterness forefront, masking a subtle sweetness that balances this drink out. This background sweetness and vanilla preserves it's spot on the periphery of the Canadian whisky flavour profile to me. Despite this, the rye spice shines and maintains the spotlight.
Finish
Full and spicy. Residual flavors lingering on the soft palate. Bitter coffee or dark chocolate. Lingering oak.
This was my last ounce from this bottle and I wish I had spent this time with it sooner! Very interesting in its category and well worth exploring for its price point. I will be replacing this bottle at my earliest convenience!

@rawalker Thanks for that comparison! I particularly appreciate the VFM aspect and drinkability of Lot 40 neat.
@ContemplativeFox. I read this comment and did a quick one sip of Lot 40 vs Wiser's Triple Barrel. Lot 40 is $37.89 CAD vs $24.47 CAD for Triple Barrel. Both very good ryes and very similar flavour profiles, maybe because they are both Dr. Don products. The Triple Barrel is somewhat spicer and Lot 40 somewhat creamier. Both are fantastic is a whisky cocktail but to me the spice makes Triple Barrel probably better in a cocktail and Lot 40 better neat. However, I'm not convinced Lot 40 is good enough to simply enjoy neat. So bang for buck, assuming using for cocktail, Triple Barrel is a no brainer and spectacular.
@melissavanlo, nope this one is not maple flavoured. However, it does make for a delicious old-fashioned with some maple simple syrup!
@ContemplativeFox yes good bang for your buck here, especially in Canada. it won Canadian whiskey of the year a number of years ago at the Canadian whisky awards... can afford to use it as a cocktail or drink it straight
I'd better give this one another shot. Seems to be widely liked and is quite reasonably priced!
Is this the maple one I tried?
