Mosgaard Single Malt Whisky Pedro Ximénez Cask Finish (Batch 8)
Single Malt — Denmark
Reviewed March 8, 2024I stopped by the distillery in October, 2022 and i picked up a bottle of this. I've enjoyed it but i have not yet done a formal tasting/review, so here goes! In the Glencairn glass it's a very appealing rich amber colour. Nose: Dark fruits with rich honey and some cinnamon and nutmeg spice are up front. There are some leathery notes as well as hay/grassy notes. I'm assuming this is a young whisky but it has a surprisingly rich nose. Palate: There's a really nice oily mouthfeel here. Rich dark fruits like plums and cherries with brown sugar are present initially but then the spice comes. There is pepper and cinnamon next as well as some burn from what I suspect is the young age. This is not unwelcome actually and is surprisingly a nice counterpoint to the richness. Finish: Long and chewy with a burnt brown sugar/caramel flavour. The pepperiness lingers but interestingly the sweetness from the brown sugar persists even longer, allowing a delicious balance of sweet and spicy. Overall considering this is presumably a relatively young whisky, I think it is great and I have really enjoyed every drink from my bottle. I would recommend this one for sure, and well done Denmark!Mosgaard Whisky -
Bunnahabhain Canasta Cask Maturation (Fèis Ìle 2023)
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed February 2, 2024 (edited February 3, 2024)I picked this up with a gift card and it's my first foray into Bunnahabhain. It's 51.2% and although it doesn't taste like this, I've brought it down to about 47%. Nose: This is quite rich. The predominant aroma I get is cinnamon toast. I also get vanilla, creme brulee, and some dark cherries. Palate: There is a dark richness immediately here. Brown sugar, cherry pie, molasses, etc. But there is some leather and spiciness with some cinnamon and black pepper percolating through. Finish: The sides of the tongue develop a delicious burn from the sherry that combines with a tanniny dryness on the roof of the mouth to create a delightful sensation. The spice hangs sround for some time and there is a delicious bitterness that complements the spice and deep sweetness. Overall, although I would probably prefer to turn down the sherry a notch, this is great and I would definitely recommend it. I'm looking forward to trying other Bunnahabhain iterations.199.99 CAD per BottleBCLIQUOR Abbotsford Village -
Glendalough 7 Year Mizunara Finish
Single Malt — Ireland
Reviewed January 7, 2024 (edited January 21, 2024)I have enjoyed numerous Irish whiskeys in the past and I was excited to receive this as a gift and see what Mizunara did to the whiskey. It is a medium amber colour and appears to have an oily viscosity to it. Nose: I do not get the usual green apple and orchard fruits that I often get from Irish whiskeys. Instead, I get stewed prunes and. Christmas pudding cake with brandy. There is a winey port-like nose to it as well, which is surprising. Palate: Initially quite sweet and rich with dark fruits like plums. Cinnamon and baking spices immediately follow. Sherry then enters the picture and takes over the experience. Finish: Quite long but not overly pleasant. The sherry flavour seems to last forever along with a slight bitterness. Overall, I'm quite disappointed with this whiskey. I had hoped to experience a typical Irish whiskey with enhanced spicy oak notes. Unfortunately, to me it tastes like they poured this onto a Mizunara barrell that was filled with sherry still. This had so much potential but falls very short and I would not recommend this at the proce point.136.99 CAD per BottleBCLIQUOR Abbotsford Village -
I arrived in PEI from the Pacific coast of Canada and I was intrigued to pick up this bottle to try over my two week visit to Atlantic Canada, which is coming to an end (both the bottle and the trip). Nose: Ripe fruits are forefront, particularly peaches, but there are also some light citrus notes, including grapefruit and lemon zest. There is a hint of fresh cut grass. I'm not getting much oak or other notes here and my initial impression was that it smelled young, confirmed when I read here that it was 6 years. Palate: Initially some sweet vanilla presents and is prominent through the tasting. Some mild cinnamon spice emerges with some brown sugar in the background. There is some slight citrus mid-palate. Finish: Surprisingly long, with a nice grainy, chewy finish. A lingering burn is consistent with the young age of this. Overall, this was surprisingly good. It tastes young but I think it has a lot of potential. So much so that I have picked up a bottle of their 10 year old single malt (Glen Breton), which I will try upon my return!PEI Liquor

Knob Creek 9 Year Single Barrel Reserve
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed June 9, 2023 (edited August 25, 2024)This was a self-bottled distillery bottle i picked up while with @robwalker in Kentucky in May, 2023. Tasting notes are based on a dilution to about 94 proof. Nose: Classic bourbon nose - caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a touch of maple, but turned up to 11. This nose just begs to stop smelling and start tasting. Palate: Initially very sweet and creamy. This reminds me of French toast, although skightly burnt. Shortly thereafter the spice starts to activate the tip of the tongue and persists, leading into a delicious finish. Finish: Long and sweet with a delicious peppery spice that takes over and lingers for some time. I also get a hint of bitter orange peel here. Overall, this is fantastic and one of my new favourite bourbons. I haven't compared to any of the other single barrel select bottlings, which would be interesting. Regardless, if I come across another bottle in the future I will be sure to pick it up.Jim Beam American Stillhouse -
Canadian Club Chronicles 45 Year
Canadian — Ontario, Canada
Reviewed April 29, 2023 (edited October 13, 2023)This was an amazing gift from @BradMacario! I've tried and veey much enjoyed the other years in the Chronicles line (including some other donations from @BradMacario) and I'm excited to spend some time with it here. Nose: There are a lot of brown sugar and maple syrup notes at the forefront. There is some cinnamon in the background. This is reminiscent of delicious French Toast. Palate: There is a surprising amount of soice that hits early on. Black pepper and cinnamon hearts are the stars here surprisingly, given the sweetness on the nose. There is a trace of bitter dark chocolate here as well. Finish: This is a lovely long finish with some briny bitterness that hangs around on the back of the palate for some time. Notes of dark chocolate are here as well as some fresh garden mint. There is a delicious leathery chewiness that is enioyable for well over a minute. Overall this latest edition of the CC Chronicles series does not disappoint. It has a little bit of everything - sweetness on the nose, a spicy palate, and a long chewy finish. I highly recommend any or all of these bottles, with this one possibly being the best thus far. -
Glen Grant 15 Year Batch Strength 1st Edition
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed April 22, 2023 (edited April 23, 2023)Surprisingly pale for a 15 year old whisky, especially given the use of first-fill bourbon casks. Nonetheless the appearance deceives the drinker and provides much more complexity than expected. Nose: Peaches are on the forefront here. There are delicious notes of vanilla and brown sugar as well, remoniscent of a peach cobbler woth vanilla ice cream. A touch of floral notes round out the nose. Palate: A few drops of water were added to bring the ABV down, although this does not drink like a 50% on a brief initial taste. Fruity notes, especially cooked peaches and dried apricots quickly arise. There is also some bamimg spices like cinnamon, continuing along the peach cobbler theme. I don't get a lot for floral notes on the palate as the nose suggested. Finish: Medium to long. Some really nice bitterness hangs around on the roof of the mouth. Burnt sugar and subtle bitter dark chocolate lingers. The dry tingling on the hard palate adds to the tasting experience. Overall I really enjoyed this whisky. It's a delicious fruity whisky packed with flavour. I would certainly recommend. -
Okanagan Spirits BC Rye Whisky
Canadian — British Columbia , Canada
Reviewed August 7, 2022 (edited August 8, 2022)Nose: There's a very unique aroma. Not sure if it's pleasant or unpleasant. I get almost a grape-like note but not overly sweet. Reminds me for some reason of a grappa from grape stems and skins. I get a little vanilla and some subtle maple too. Palate: This is much more appealing than the nose. Initially quite mellow and heavy on the vanilla notes. Then some gentle pepper and cinnamon emerge but are not overpowering. The maltiness from the 49% malted barley is apparent here giving some notes of fresh cut grass and dried apricots. Finish: Medium. The black pepper sticks around and there is some chewy leather notes. Overall this is an interesting whisky. Pretty decent for the price and happy to have grabbed a bottle.60.0 CAD per BottleOkanagan Spirits Craft Distillery -
Okanagan Spirits BLK BRBN Cask Strength Bourbon-Style Whisky
Canadian — Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada
Reviewed August 6, 2022 (edited August 7, 2022)A visit to the distillery allowed me to grab a bottle of this and the Okanagan Spirits Rye. As I understand it, this is 51 percent corn and the secondary grain is malted barley, which is an unusual mashbill for a "bourbon". Could be interesting nonetheless. I've taken this from 54 percent to about 47 percent. Nose: I'm having a hard time picking up distinctive aromas here initially but slowly things open up. I'm getting some dill and pepper spice. Also I get some barbequed pineapple in the background. Some bitter orange peel completes what was initially a bland nose and finishes it nice and sweetly. Palate: Very nice creamy mouth feel. It's not initially as sweet as I had anticipated. Initially there is an earthy, grainy flavour and then black pepper emerges. The spice takes command thereafter. I'm not getting the typical vanilla and brown sugar notes I usually get with bourbon. Finish: Medium to long, and spicy. The pepper spice persists on the tip and sides of the tongue. A grassy, earthy flavour gives some chewy fullness to the finish. Overall, this is very good. Not a typical bourbon flavour profile despite their attempt to do so. This may be due to the high malt content. However, this is still very enjoyable and may be particularly enjoyed by someone who would traditionally consider themselves a scotch drinker.Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery -
I received this as a gift and I have to admit this was not a whisky I was familiar with. I'm not usually a huge fan of peated whiskies, but looking forward to trying it. Nose: Spice on the forefront with some cinnamon and black pepper. There is a fair amount of iodine/peat on the nose as well. I also get some leather, particularly like an oiled baseball glove. Palate: It's surprisingly sweet immediately with flavours of brown sugar and vanilla. However, the black pepper quickly comes on an lingers. The peat arises mid-palate and fades into that same old baseball glove note. Finish: Medium to long. More of the oiled leather. Adhesive bandages are here too. I find although it is fairly long, at the end it is somewhat bitter and slightly unpleasant. Overall, this is okay. Would I buy a bottle? No. Would I drink a free one? Of course!69.99 CAD per BottleAbbotsford
