Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva 15
Aged Rum — Dominican Republic
Reviewed

Nose - molasses, heavy oak char, caramel, vanilla, cherry, almond, amaretto, mild overripe banana funk, sweet tobacco, maple syrup, moderate to high ethanol burn.
Taste - dark molasses, butterscotch, creamy vanilla, maple syrup, banana funk, sweet tobacco, cherry, almond, barrel char, malty cereal grain, moderate alcohol bite, finishing fairly long with molasses, fruit funk, butterscotch flavors.
This is a decent sipper that could also be a great mixer. Its profile seems to straddle Barbados and Jamaican rum flavors. I wouldn’t mind adding a bottle to the collection.

@WhiskyWitch I’ve never tried RZ, but if you can pick this up for under $30, I think it could be a compelling option. I’d rather spend that same money on a Doorly’s 12 Year though.
Thanks for the review! This is currently on sale, and I was thinking of adding it as a last-minute contender against Ron Zacapa.
Yeah, I find rum age statements to be really annoying too @ctbeck11 It's nice with some places like Jamaica that they do regulate them in a reasonable manner. Seeing solera rum from a country where I'm not familiar with the laws though makes me highly suspicious.
@ContemplativeFox Agreed. It was a bit hot. They use a solera system, so 15 years is a bit misleading, but such is life with rum age statements. At least they have some basis in reality with theirs.
Sounds like it could use a little more time aging, but it sounds intriguing. Jamaican rums can be a bit austere, so it's nice to see something maintaining some of that maturity, but going a somewhat different direction.
