Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva 15 Rum
Ron Matusalem // Dominican Republic
The Matusalem brand originated in Cuba, an allusion that remains on the label as "the Spirit of Cuba," and migrated to the Dominican Republic at the outset of the revolution. The rum is molasses-based, aged in a solera system and bottled with an average age of 15 years. The color is brilliant, deep gold; the legs are far slower moving than any a salsa dancer's.
Aged RumRum that is aged, but no specific type or size barrel required. No set time required for length of aging, but will often carry an age statement (which should be taken with a grain of salt). Often thought of as "sipping rums".
"The aromas are beguiling ones of caramel, vanilla and woody campfire spiked with a touch of malt. There's still some piquant (though not quite burning) heat on the palate coupled to a suggestion of almond/cherry pit, and the body comes across as ample but light enough on its feet to sip alone or in cocktail form. Vanilla and a whiff of wood dominate the medium finish. "
