Nose - orange zest, cinnamon, walnut, pear, creamy vanilla, candy corn, powdered sugar, peach, honey, honeysuckle, nougat, floral notes, caramel, lemon, light oak influence, mild ethanol burn.
Taste - honey, pear, caramel, powdered sugar, floral notes, grape, sour fruit, cinnamon, nutty nougat, peach, creamy vanilla, lemon, orange, walnut or pecan, mild to moderate alcohol bite, finishing quickly with sour fruit, vanilla cream, and cinnamon flavors.
Not bad, other than some sourness going on in the palate and finish. It’s very mild, but there’s a decent amount going on here. I picked up some of the same flavors in Nikka From the Barrel (which could just be in my head, because I know they have very different mash bills), but this is a far inferior expression in my opinion. The flavors seem out of sync here and fall short of the wonderful harmony I enjoy in the other.

$170 is more of what I'd expect. I often wish that I lived at the south end of Washington so I could go into portland to shop. I'm glad you're not stuck with just he VA stores.
@ContemplativeFox For example, Signet in VA is $230, TW in MD is $240, and a popular place I go in DC is $170, so it’s definitely worth shopping around if you leave near a border like I do.
@ContemplativeFox You’re not wrong. It seems to be hit or miss. Some things are way more expensive and others can be cheaper (if you can find them). The biggest issue in VA is the lack of selection. I always check prices between the VA ABC and some of the larger DC and Maryland liquor stores to see where the best deals are.
I thought that control states were supposed to be cheaper with worse selection @ctbeck11 . Most disappointing :( It's $85 here, but at least there's a pretty decent selection around
@ContemplativeFox It’s one of the many pleasures of living in a control state.
Dang, $80 is a pretty high price for this @ctbeck11 . I'm used to it being $50-60 (which I also think is pushing it).
@ContemplativeFox Yep. Other than Nikka From the Barrel (that I liked so much, I bought two bottles), I always wait until I see a Japanese at a restaurant to try. I’d rather spend $15 to try something than $80 (which the VA ABC charges for this) to buy of bottle that I probably won’t like.
I wasn't blown away be this either and I also much prefer FTB. Classic case of poor VFM from Japanese whisky.
