Nose: orange, rock pool, shortbread biscuit, lemsip, charity shop fusty musty clothes, custard cream, earl grey tea
Palate: grapefruit, a little salt, wood, Russian caravan tea (but with less lapsang souchong)
Finish: vinous dry and lightly tannic, salty and sweet

Semi-Final 1:
Old Pulteney 12yo versus Compass Box King St. Artists Blend
From the notes above I think if this were a cartoon character it would be Captain Haddock. Though very different, the malty, fruity taste of the Artists Blend holds its own against the seafaring souse, as it likewise does on the finish. But the nose of OP12 has more about it and so with an expletive-heavy outburst the short-tempered sailor scares off the sensitive artist. Blistering barnacles!

The intolerable torment of a whiskyphile. Faced with a large array of samples and miniatures I can suffer from analysis paralysis - deciding on a dram can often take twice as long as drinking it. So I have selected sixteen scotch whiskies that are 12yrs or younger or NAS to battle it out in a Scotch Deathmatch. It’s my incentive to lighten the logjam. Follow along if you care (and really why should you?). Oh the drama!

@Anthology No worries. I like the way you think, just hope your friends like salt 😀
@CKarmios Sorry for the delay...didn’t see the question mark at the end. Sure did pick up a couple. Came with a couple OP-branded whiskey tumblers to boot. So I’m thinking of picking up a few more to use as gifts for friends who’re contemplating venturing into the whiskeyverse.
@Anthology Thanks mate, you are very considerate. I, also, managed to snag the last couple of the old stock from a EU online store. Paid about the same but in euros. That’s a good price for you guys - trust you bought at least one?
@CKarmios I found a local purveyor in SoCal with a stock of the original OP at a decent price (sub $35) if you’re still interested in adding another bottle to your shelf.
@Anthology Abate no more my good sir, for the question has indeed already been posed, but look elsewhere, specifically in the review concerning the semifinal’s other antagonist :-)
Just for fun, I’m waiting [with baited breath] for @CKarmios to inquire whether this review is for the old old OP, or the new old OP (or is it the new new OP)? 😊
@robertwayne64024 thanks. I know what you’re saying - it’s an appealingly light and perfectly balanced dram, though maybe with a touch more brine than your typical speysider.
Nice review. One of my favorite 12 tear olds. I think it could pose as a Speysider.
