The Jack Rose Royale Cocktail

November 11, 2017

The Jack Rose comes from the sour cocktail family, which incorporates a liquor, citrus juice and sweetener. In this case, we use applejack, lime and grenadine. The drink, like many cocktails, doesn’t have a clear creator, but first appeared in print around 1905. Regardless of the drink’s origins, the Jack Rose can clearly rest on its makeup and appearance for its name: the applejack and the rose color the grenadine provides. This drink fell out of fashion around the 1940s, but has made its way back onto bar menus when classic cocktails came back to life in the mid-2000s.

Making the Jack Rose Royale

To elevate the drink slightly, instead of using applejack, we’re going to use Laird’s 100% Apple Brandy. We’re also going to add Champagne (because why not?). A Royale cocktail is one in which Champagne is added, hence the moniker. We believe that it is always the right time for Champagne, especially during the holiday season. This cocktail fits nicely with the last days of autumn and first days of winter.

This apple brandy also comes in at 100-proof for a little extra oomph and is made today just like it was over 200 years ago, using 20 pounds of apples for each bottle. Make this cocktail for your friends and family this season and turn them on to something new!

Recipe:

– 2 oz Laird’s Straight Apple Brandy
– 1 oz lime or lemon juice (lemon if you’d like a little more sweet)
– ½ oz grenadine
– Champagne to top

Shake all ingredients in ice-filled cocktail shaker. Pour and strain into a chilled coupe glass. Top glass with Champagne. Garnish with slice of apple or lime/lemon peel.
