Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed October 14, 2017 (edited September 13, 2020)Oct 2017. A little water helped. Musky, sawdust smell, and smells like a musky dad hug from long ago. Lovely sweet taste, with just a hint of peat at the back end. Sweet aftertaste. Tasted just after a pleasurable second tasting of Midleton Barry Crockett Legacy that was bumped from a four to a five star rating. Second tasting a bit harsher but still nice. The musky nose improves during latter sips. Third tasting while watching United vs West Brom (delayed) in late December. First dram of the night. Loved it! Worth a 4.5 and will now elevate this to the top shelf. -
Oct 2017 Eaten after mild curry and taken with a few drops of water. Taste: caramelised banana is what strikes me most. 2.5 stars Second taste after Powers Johns Lane. No water. Light, fruity nose. Easy but unremarkable taste. May be worth bumping to a 3 but will wait until next taste. In any case, not one to invest in. Third taste after a West Cork 10 year old single malt, which I preferred over this. Not better than a 3 and probably 2.5 stars is where it rests.

Midleton Very Rare Barry Crockett Legacy
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed September 20, 2017 (edited December 27, 2019)Sep 2017 The full bottle typically costs around €250 and so is out of my comfort range but I was lucky enough to receive a gift pack that included a miniature bottle of it along with Redbreast 12, Green Spot, and Powers John's Lane ( http://mitchellandson.com/single-pot-still-4x50ml-gift-pack.html). A few drops of water improved it slightly. The nose is of honey and toffee and tastes of orange and other fruits ending with a wonderfully lingering aftertaste. It is a torture to know that due to the price my opportunities to enjoy this frequently will be few and far between. However, the other three whiskeys in the pack are top notch and can be bought without the risk of defaulting on a mortgage payment.
