Corzo Tequila Silver
Tequila Blanco — Los Altos, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed September 23, 2019 (edited November 12, 2019)You know the old discussion, is something a fruit or a vegetable? Well, Corzo has decided that agave is a vegetable. It tastes like this was a definite choice. No real sweetness or citrus tang. Oily and a little bitter, the maybe, asparagus and undercooked potato (?) flavor is different. So I like the unique quality of this, though it isn't really in my flavor preference. -
Gordon's London Dry Gin (40%)
London Dry Gin — Canada
Reviewed September 12, 2019 (edited January 20, 2021)It started to seem crazy to keep buying $35 plus tax boutique gins and then mix them with tonic. So I'm working my way thru the old school grandpa gins, Beefeaters, Plymouth, Boodles, etc. Hemingway was right on this one. Gordon's is really well made and there is a reason its been done this way for centuries. It being distilled in Canada makes zero difference to me. As the extra extra dry martini (aka chilled straight up) it really jumps with bursts of juniper, citrus, and spice. As a gin and tonic it loses some complexity and tastes strongly of lemon, though not in any bad way. Perfect for a thirst quencher G&T vs. the sit and ponder life's complexity G&T. For bang for your buck it is a 7 out of 5. -
Don Q Signature Release Single Barrel 2005
Aged Rum — Puerto Rico
Reviewed August 20, 2019 (edited March 20, 2020)This rum to me is an argument for the importance of the rum maestro. This one note dry rum with a fair amount of heat could be a key ingredient to a great blend. As it is, a really a good cocktail rum, but not a sipper. -
Lunazul Blanco Tequila
Tequila Blanco — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed August 20, 2019 (edited November 12, 2019)Beautiful sweet agave scent and flavor. There is so much tequila out there at twice this price, but with only half this quality. This sips wonderfully and makes a great Paloma. -
Fortaleza Blanco Tequila
Tequila Blanco — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed July 26, 2019 (edited November 12, 2019)From the minute you pull the cork, the aroma of this Tequila starts swirling around you. People rave about this for good reason, its just a fortress of agave. To me the scent and taste match perfectly. -
Flor de Caña Gran Reserva 7 Rum
Gold Rum — Nicaragua
Reviewed July 23, 2019 (edited November 12, 2019)Really flat. Nothing to rub your tongue on. Even in Tiki drinks its uninspired. -
Ron Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva Rum
Aged Rum — Venezuela
Reviewed July 23, 2019 (edited November 12, 2019)Complex and multi-flavored with baking spices that change with each sip. When I want a fine rum with an integrated sweetness, this is the ticket. It is like two different drinks, both wonderful, depending on whether or not you add an ice cube. -
4 Copas Tequila Blanco
Tequila Blanco — Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed July 23, 2019 (edited May 24, 2020)I love the taste of agave. I started my tequila journey with Anejo's and have gradually worked my way back to Blanco's. I have a half dozen or so in my bar, all good and different to varying degrees. I saw the 98 score for 4 Copas from Jack Roberteillo here on Distillers, and thought, 'What, a Blanco? Reviewers always love those extra extra extra Anejo's.' Thank you Jack! This drink is awesome. How it could be so full of fruit and so lacking in any sight of bite or harshness, I don't understand. A tequila to have before dinner, after dinner, during dinner, or instead of dinner. -
El Dorado 21 Year Old Special Reserve
Aged Rum — Guyana
Reviewed July 23, 2019 (edited July 22, 2020)One of the best drinks in the world to my taste. Up with any whiskey I have had the opportunity to taste. Demerara rums are my favorite and this is to me their greatest expression. Amazing complexity that is both layered and evolving. Silky and lingering it is delicious at every check point. Many older rums, to me, are harmed by the taint of oxidation and can't survive the expression of wet leather and heated rubber which that can bring. Like an old Barolo it is amazing the freshness and the sophistication of this drink. The yummy factor on this is one is tremendous, and each sip will take you on a journey.
