Something funky on the nose, along with some maple and brown sugar sweetness. Plus the singeing of my nose hairs tells me this isn’t going to be particularly smooth. More funkiness on the palate with some rye spice was coming out, less sweet here than on the nose. Finishes okay with a decently lengthy hug, but I still can’t shake the funk.

Jack Daniel's Old No. 7
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed April 18, 2020 (edited May 9, 2020)Best part is the nose. Bananas for days, yes, but also cherries...fake cherries like Cheerwine. Okay mouth. Less cherries, and more bananas turning into banana nut bread. Finish is the least pleasant part, when the banana nut bread seems to devolve into astringent and chemical-y flavors that linger when you wish they would just go away. Not great IMO, but if you like bananas then it’ll probly do ya just fine. -
Nose- vanilla, ethanol, brown sugar, Mouth - proof is immediately present, aggressive heat that you have to fight to get past. Finish - pecan pie crust and all, dusty dryness that I get from regular Larceny, but not as noticeable If you like Larceny, it’s definitely a step up. I’m not the biggest fan but this is definitely better than the original.

Woodford Reserve Distillery Series Double Double Oaked 2019
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 9, 2020 (edited December 18, 2020)WR Double Oaked was an early favorite of mine, and I have long since wanted to get my hands on this extra special rendition. Alas! Nose - brown sugar for days, so sweet, marzipan, cherry, and...brownie batter? Mouth - warm, syrupy, sweet, oaky tannins. WOAH sudden savory smoked meat (what?)! Like buttery rendered pork fat fresh off the smoker. Finish - smooth, no heat, so sweet. Okay, so maybe I’ve been drinking a little, but I’m not kidding about the surprise savory notes that came out of nowhere. I’m gonna attribute that to the smokey/woodiness coming from the extra time in the second toasted barrel. 5/5 for excitement and uniqueness, 4/5 because it's significantly sweeter than I'd normally prefer, so let's split the difference. Man this one was fun, let’s go again!49.99 USD per Bottle -
Wild Turkey Rare Breed Barrel Proof Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 9, 2020 (edited September 24, 2020)Beautiful, perfect amber color. Just so pleasing to look at. I would say the nose is a little musty rather than funky, as I’ve heard others attribute to the brand, but definitely something particular. Robust and dense in a great way, the mustiness shows up again in the mouth. I have a hunch that can be attributed to the 12% malted barley in the mash bill because it reminds me ever so slightly (and I mean slightly) of a nice single malt scotch. I dunno, call me crazy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The proof shows up quick on the finish, then settles into a nice long warm and calming hug. This one is such a great value for the price and availability. -
1792 Full Proof Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 23, 2020 (edited April 3, 2020)I like this one. Definitely picking up some bananas on the nose, nice amount of oak on the tongue with some drying tannins as well as quite a bit of heat, and an interesting perfumey finish. Dunno if I agree with Jim Murray on it being works whiskey of the year, but it’s an undeniably tasty pour.
