[1.16.2018] Sick as a dog this week (the doc told me I was two days from pneumonia) and tossing back antibiotics with company bourbon. Opinions aren't always meant to be trusted... I really didn't find much of interest in this whiskey. It was short, clean, almost too sweet. Not likely worth the price.

[1.13.17] Headed out to see the Phantom of the Opera tonight and the classy restaurant stopped carrying Evan Williams. Figured I'd try something new. Not a bad whiskey by any means and probably better than the 83 it scored here. Clean, fresh, a bit of vanilla and floral sweetness. But there's just not the depth of flavor I would expect from something name "Statesman". I didn't catch the spice or smokiness in this glass. Nice to try, enjoyed the drink but wouldn't buy the bottle. [2.5.18] Update. Remember that time I said I wouldn't buy a bottle? Disclaimer is that I would be willing to take one for free. Company gave me a few bottles as a thanks when I left. Almost made me regret leaving. Almost.

Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 31, 2017 (edited January 1, 2018)[12/31/17] Got this one as a double for $5 at a local pub. Couldn't argue with the price of admission and I wasn't disappointed. This pretty well checks everything off of my list. Smooth, lightly floral, smoky but not briney or oily. This is an easy drinker with above average proof and full character. I can't believe I got it cheaper than a pint of stout. -
Russell's Reserve 6 Year Rye
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 15, 2017 (edited January 1, 2018)[12.17.2017] Disclaimer, I've not actually drank from the bottle at my house. It's signed by Jimmy and Eddie, and it seems something pretty fantastic would have to happen to dictate a celebration like that. I have it from good authority that this is the best whiskey made by these folks, that's why Jimmy said it's named after him. Solid whiskey that epitomizes the Wild Turkey brand/line. Personally, I like the barrel-proof versions with a bit more bite to them. -
Tullamore D.E.W. 12 Year Special Reserve
Blended — Ireland
Reviewed December 15, 2017 (edited December 16, 2018)[12.15.2017] I guess it's been a while since I've been on the app, probably longer than it's been since my last whiskey. Got this one for Christmas from my father-in-law (obviously a good man) in 2016 and the cold snow and warm fireplace made this feel like the night. Again, I'm a sucker for those whiskeys partially aged in a sherry cask. This is fruity and light, even pale in color. If I didn't know better, I'd swear this was fermented from honey itself. This is a dangerously easy drinker with a smooth and fair malt flavor followed by a nutty, floury aftertaste. -
[11.4.17] Sometimes the Buckeyes lose, and sometimes your wife decides that means she needs to watch a depressing movie that leads you to the hotel bar because: “Hell, my night’s going down the tubes anyhow”. This is the perfect bourbon for the nights that are heading to hell in a handbasket. Classic taste by Russell but stiff and unrefined for the times you just don’t give a dang. Go get ‘em.

[9/6/17] Out here on the company dollar again, figured the risk is pretty minimal. The name drew me in but I probably won't own a bottle. Ever. Mild, with no distinction. Sure, its creamy, smooth finishing and soft toffee. The char has a hint of vanilla reminiscent of scratch cask scotch. But this is neither memorable nor a value buy.

Woodford Reserve Kentucky Derby 143
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 6, 2017 (edited January 18, 2020)[5.6.2017] I can't give you many tasting notes on this. I made it into mint juleps like it was intended. And they were awesome. Always Dreaming the winner, and there goes another $5.
