Hendrick's Midsummer Solstice
Modern Gin — Scotland
Reviewed November 14, 2020 (edited December 29, 2020)- nose: floral. Has some mineral, citrus notes like Lacroix. Somewhere in between orange and lemon. - Palate: sweet perfume. Floral notes, including the classic Hendricks’s rose, with a fruit background. Not overly drying floral notes. orange peel. Very mild juniper notes—much less than the classic Hendricks. Wonderful oily mouthfeel. - Great gin on the rocks. Not overly complex, but interesting enough to keep you going back to it. -
New Riff 4 Year Single Barrel Rye
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed November 13, 2020 (edited May 6, 2021)I love this nose. It is a wonderful rye nose with a very strong cinnamon and baking spice influence. Lots of mint, too. The palate is just way too hot for me. This is a bartender’s DREAM rye, though. Makes a wonderful spicy Manhattan or Boulevardier. It’s got all the classic rye notes, just turned up to 11. I’m torn on this one. It’s just too much rye spice (might just be this barrel) for me to genuinely enjoy neat, but it’s an amazing cocktail rye or with a few drops of water to open it up. I don’t know of any other whiskies using a 100% rye without any malted barley at all. That in itself is commendable.
