Wild Turkey American Honey
Other Liqueurs — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 24, 2020 (edited October 30, 2020)What really surprises me here right off the bad is that my first thought upon smelling this is not "oh, this smells like a liqueur" or "oh, this smells like honey" or even "oh this smells bad" or "oh, this smells good", but "oh, this smells like Wild Turkey". That's promising though since it means the whiskey isn't hidden. On the nose I get wild turkey's re-forward mashbill with some added fresh orange sweetness like in Grand Marnier. I'm not sure I smell anything particularly like honey though. The palate is quite sweet but is under control. I do get a fair amount of the whiskey and there's this big, light overarching floral flavor that is very nice. It isn't harsh at all really. I do get that orange and I think it's a bit more like the Cointreau orange flavor with its big sweetness and otherwise light profile. It certainly isn't as robust as Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao. I'm actually quite enjoying sipping this. It tastes elegant and interesting. The high rye content of the whiskey really backs up the floral flavors. I wouldn't say it's very complex, but it's fairly nice. Nothing amazing to be sure, but surprisingly sippable with its nice balance. I particularly appreciate how restrained everything is: the sweetness isn't excessive and none of the other flavors punch you in the face either. Yukon Jack is harsher, less balanced, and less floral yet somehow also less rich. Wild Turkey American Honey is leagues better. Though this still isn't as rich as Cointreau and doesn't have as much of an orange flavor (and isn't really a reasonable substitution), the floral flavor tastes fairly good despite being light and it's smooth.16.5 USD per Bottle -
The nose has something a bit savory and a bit sweet, but overall not a huge amount going on. I can sort of imagine I'm getting a bit of honey and pepper on the nose, but it's not terribly apparent. The palate is surprisingly thin and the flavor is surprisingly dry. I do get quite a bit of pepper in here, but not in an overly harsh way. It is certainly warming though. The herbal character of the pepper is a bit rich and goes well here. There is something sweet and oily as well rounding it out that I assume is the honey. It narrowly avoids tasting like rubber. I can't say I'm a fan of this, but it's interesting in a way that isn't just code for "bad" and it isn't a terribly challenging profile, so it's easy to imagine that it could actually be mixed into something. It's not terribly complex but the profile does generally work and it is vodka after all. It could do with a bit less harshness and a bit fuller mouth feel for sure though. Frankly, I don't think that I need a honey pepper vodka in my life. The herbal character is the most interesting and best part of this, but it also invites in a couple of unpleasant flavors.14.0 USD per Bottle

Sheep Dog Peanut Butter Whiskey
Flavored Whiskey — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 23, 2020 (edited October 30, 2020)This is fairly solid. Decent complexity with interesting floral and buttery notes. There is a bit much of an alcohol flavor, but not too much. It's a bit peppery but mostly smooth. I'm not loving it and it doesn't really taste quite like peanut butter, but I do get that peanut butter vibe and it tastes fine enough so I'm not opposed to drinking it. This would be my go-to among the peanut butter whiskeys I e tried so far.15.5 USD per Bottle -
Ram's Point Peanut Butter Whiskey
Flavored Whiskey — USA
Reviewed July 23, 2020 (edited September 6, 2024)I like the richness. There is some alcohol though and there's definitely something a bit like rubber. It's not that good, though it's better than the majority of flavored vodkas. It has a more genuine peanut butter flavor than Sheep Dog does, but it just isn't as good and that rubber flavor makes it worse than 99 Peanut Butter too. Perhaps I should have bought a Skrewball mini to compare too.15.0 USD per Bottle -
On second tasting, this isn't as good as it was before. The alcohol is stronger and there isn't a ton of richness compared with alternatives - though it isn't weak by any means. There's a bit too much alcohol flavor. It's pretty bland, but certainly better than most flavored vodkas.19.0 USD per Bottle

It has a fairly strong nose. It has an alcohol burn and otherwise smells light with pine and a dash of earth. The palate is actually pretty interesting and decent. It's earthy and bitter with even a bit of a cocoa taste. It's dry and herbal with the pine and also something else coming in. It's quite peppery. A bit harsh too, but the pepper is a clear flavor that is pretty nice. There's a twist of lemon in it too. It's fairly rich with a nice savory (but not meaty) earthiness to it. I actually rather enjoy this. It's not amazing, but it's better than Dover. There's just a touch of sweetness. The alcohol is still a bit much of course, but this is a surprisingly good gin. I'm eventually getting a little bit of floral flavor too. It's more savory and less citric than Beefeater with less harshness as well. Between the two, I think I'll take this. Yeah, it's a solid gin. What more do you want from me here?12.0 USD per Bottle

Ah, there's kind of a nice rich flavor here. It's still very harsh though. The palate isn't bad, but it is boring. A good choice if you have a drink that needs a bit more of a kick, but otherwise not that good. The profile is fine but boring. It's tough to figure out a reasonable final rating for this because it's so harsh. There is a hair of something bitter and industrial in here, so I'm maintaining my last rating. There are some nice fruity floral hints, but nothing too exciting.12.0 USD per Bottle
