George T. Stagg Bourbon (Fall 2017)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 12, 2019 (edited August 15, 2019)Finished 3/5 of a bottle, free-hand 2+oz pour at a time, with Matt the Lion at Trio Grill in Merrifield. Sat down at the bar, saw the bottle, heard the $35 price, called in the cavalry and drained the f*cker. Poured neat in rocks glass. Rich, spicy, oak, caramel, loooong finish. Just awesome. 8/12/1935.0 USD per Pour -
Straight Edge Bourbon
Bourbon — Tennessee and Kentucky (Finished and Bottled in California), USA
Reviewed August 7, 2019750ml neat in a Glencairn at home. Nose is sweet, with toffee and caramel, brown sugar and stewed apples. Rich. Taste is somehow both deeper and brighter, with the toffee descending to tobacco and leather, while the apple is joined by honey and orange. Long finish maintains the richness and adds some spice notes. Very interesting, unlike any bourbon I have had. The Mercury Head barrels have really done some cool things to the whiskey. My buddy Matt the Lion was right, I quite like this. 8/7/1954.69 USD per Bottle -
Johnny Drum Private Stock Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 5, 2019 (edited August 6, 2019)750ml neat in Glencairn at home. $33.99 at Morris Miller Liquors in DC. Nose has vanilla, rye spice, green apples. Touch of heat. Nice. Taste is more sharp, with some grassy notes amongst the spicy rye, some bitterness, along with a hint of apples and caramel. Lingering spice. I don't love it, but it is quite decent for the price. 8/5/19.33.99 USD per Bottle -
Today I realized that the only cognac I have ever tried was a Louis XIII on a drunken date almost 20 years ago. I recall not liking it at all, though I was primarily a lite beer drinker then. So let's jump back in on the other end of the scale. 50ml neat at home. Nose is buttery, sightly herbal, some ethanol. Taste loses most of the butter, and has some bitter spice with the herbs and slight heat. Not really a fan. Mixed into a Sidecar: much better, mainly because now it is just the backbone beneath lemon and sugar. Like a nice alternative to a whisky sour. 7/30/19

Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 26, 2019 (edited July 31, 2019)Neat in a rocks glass at Liberty BBQ in Falls Church. Lots of citrus in the nose, followed by rye spice in the taste. Lingering spice finish. The word "bright" really comes to mind. Decent. 7/24/19
