Virginia Distillery Co. Cuvée Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Malt
Blended Malt — Multiple Countries
Reviewed July 26, 2019 (edited July 31, 2019)Last of the bottle at Mad Fox's closing day (free 1/2 pour). Berries, jam, then some mild smokiness. OK, but thin mouthfeel. -
Glenkinchie 12 Year
Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland
Reviewed July 21, 2019 (edited August 15, 2019)Last of the bottle during the craziness at Mad Fox Falls Church closing day (free 1oz pour). Neat in a rocks glass. Well, it's a Glen. Floral, mild smoke, mild peat. Nothing really stands out here. Not bad, and definitely worth more than I paid for it (again, it was free). 7/21/190.0 USD per Pour -
Glenfiddich 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed July 21, 2019 (edited August 15, 2019)Bottle pour at Mad Fox's closing day. I ordered something else, but it was slammed, and they forgot to charge me for it, so whatever. I know I have had this a half dozen times over the years, but not recently. Neat in a rocks glass. Mild spice, mild grass, mild peat, mild smoke. This is like the blended version of a single malt, if that makes any sense. Inoffensive, but utterly uninspired. 7/21/190.0 USD per Pour -
Virginia Distillery Co. Port Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Whisky
Blended Malt — Multiple Countries
Reviewed July 20, 2019Tasting poured neat from 750ml at ABC store, small plastic taster. Spice and berries, with some grape must coming on. Decent and interesting, but I must admit I am not a lover of port-finished whisky, so a sample is enough for me. 7/20/19 -
Virginia Distillery Co. Sherry Cask Finished Virginia-Highland Malt
Blended Malt — Multiple Countries
Reviewed July 20, 2019750ml poured neat in taster at home. Very lite colour. Nose has corn, hay, lite smoke, apple peel. Taste has black pepper spice, hay, some sweet sherry presence on the roof of the mouth, hint of almonds. A couple drops of water improves this a ton, letting the sweet notes come out from underneath the black pepper. Not great, but worth a try. 7/20/1965.0 USD per Bottle -
Michter's 10 Year Single Barrel Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 19, 2019 (edited August 31, 2019)750ml poured neat into Glencairn at home. Barrel 19D698. Nose is complex, with apple peel, oak, popcorn, vanilla, mild caramel, mellow corn, willow. Taste is sweet over spice, with butterscotch, nutmeg, rye spice, sawgrass, brine. Very complex. Very enjoyable. 7/19/19115.0 USD per Bottle -
Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 19, 2019 (edited December 5, 2019)750ml poured neat into Glencairn at home. Nose has vanilla, toffee, maple, definitely sweet. Nice. Taste has mild spice on the front, some oak, ginger, lite-to-moderate spice burn in the middle, with a grassy and spicy long-lasting finish. Tasting next to EHT Single Barrel, I find it to have more spice and complexity, though slightly less polished. Both are excellent; I would choose the Single Barrel by a small margin. 7/19/1939.99 USD per Bottle
