Smoky Quartz V5 Bourbon
Bourbon — New Hampshire , USA
Reviewed November 3, 2023 (edited November 17, 2023)Nose: Vanilla (almost cloying), corn, but an odd chemical note (is it rubber? varnish?) Palate: Oak, char, a little bit of vanilla towards the end of the palate Finish: A sweet but somewhat bitter finish, short to medium length As a New England native, I was excited to try something from Seabrook, NH. The Veteran owned distillery used a 100% corn mash and aged it for 16 months in 15-gallon white oak barrels- much smaller than the more commonly used 53-gallon. The smaller size allows for more contact with the wood and quicker aging. The process explains the end product: there's a lot of potential with its sweet profile but in it still shows a lot of youth and is rather unbalanced. I would like to see what a more mature version of this would yield. -
Nose: Amazingly has some bourbon characteristics: Caramel, sweet stone fruits Palate: Creamy, with a hint of vanilla and spice- very soft body Finish: Short, fades away with sweetness and spice and a hint of floral This Irish whiskey is a crushable mid-tier sipper. The influencers of the barra oats as well as the bourbon and sherry cask finishes give this single pot still a refined profile. This is a whiskey for enjoying moments with, not slinging back at the pub.65.0 USD per Bottle

Nose: Peaches, Grapes, Apple, a Brandy-like profile Palate: Faint whisps of vanilla, tannic oak, bitterness Finish: Short, almost no finish Self-described as made with 10-liter pot stills and a dream- perhaps they need to keep dreaming. The nose was interesting with its fruity notes but the palate falls absolutely flat. Thin with no finish, at first sip this whiskey came off as a 100% drain pour. However, a couple more sips I found a little bit more in the palate but overall this is a no for me dog.

Bardstown Bourbon Co. Origin Series Bottled in Bond Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 12, 2023Nose: Buttercream vanilla, salty peanuts Palate: Vanilla, Green Apple, Baking spices, Oak Finish: Short-Medium finish with a sweet profile with some hints of chocolate Upon further review this is six year Bottled-In-Bond is a great sipper at a great value within their larger protfolio of blends. If you like wheaters you are in luck!14.0 USD per PourBarrel -
Nose: A good amount of oak Palate: Strong baking spices including cinnamon and peoper with a small hint of vanilla Finish: On my first sip the spice transitioned into a vanilla sweetness that floated up my palate. Well, it’s a Wild Turkey product! Bottled at 101 proof, this single barrel was a bit thin but a serviceable sipper. However it doesn’t offer a lot more to make me come back to it again and again.16.0 USD per PourBarrel

Capsule review from Virginia Spirits Expo: Honey finishes are all the rage right now, but Catoctin says this is the Original Hot Honey Rye. A combination of three Virginia honey and an infusion of chili peppers is used to create this finished whiskey. Honey is all over the nose, palate, but the finish is where the peppers come in. It's less like a spicy hot wing and more like a Nashville hot chicken- a nice peppery but not firey finish. While this is certainly something different- it's not exactly a regular sipper for me.

Catoctin Creek Ragnarök Rye: Oderus Edition
Rye — Virginia, USA
Reviewed October 2, 2023 (edited January 29, 2024)Capsule review from Virginia Spirits Expo: Who knew that heavy metal could be this sugary sweet? This year's collaboration with heavy metal band GWAR has a nutty nose but after that, it's a very sweet palate with a short finish that is mostly sweet but has a hint of rye. All that sugar maple and rum finish makes this one a sweet sipper. -
Catoctin Creek Roundstone Rye Distiller's Edition 92 Proof
Rye — Virginia, USA
Reviewed October 2, 2023Capsule review from Virginia Spirits Expo: Distillery Becky Harris takes the top 10% of barrels and releases them at a higher 92 proof. The difference shows when compared to their flagship: the nose of rye and dill found in the 80-proof version are amped up, and the palate is full of baking spices before a finish that is a bit sweeter. -
Capsule review from Virginia Spirits Expo: On the nose this Virginia Rye has the classic dill rye note as well as banana nut bread. The palate has a hint of caramel put the baking spices shine through before returning to a short, sweet finish. A very approachable rye that tastes stronger than it's low proof.

Capsule review from Virginia Spirits Expo: What is a Milk Stout? Upon further research, it is a sweeter variation due to the addition of lactose in the brewing process. That explains a lot of what I get from this pour: a nose of mint, bread, and barley followed with a very sweet vanilla palate and follows through to a medium finish.
