Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Barrel Proof Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 23, 2016 (edited September 14, 2016)Extremely smooth for a BP bourbon. This is a top-shelfer for sure. Notes of oak, vanilla, pipe tobacco and a touch of chocolate come through on this one to balance out the rye spice. Add a splash of water to this one to let it open up. Tough to drink only one glass at a sitting. 127.2 release. 95/100. -
Belle Meade Sour Mash Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Indiana (bottled in Tennessee), USA
Reviewed January 17, 2016 (edited March 31, 2018)This is a very nice bourbon. Different enough that it is a must have for any collection. On the nose, I get the traditional caramel, vanilla, and oak but then you throw in a clove, orange, and nutmeg combination. Not overpowering, but a great nose. On the palate, this one has a great texture. It is sweet up front due to the orange, clove, and rye spices. Then comes the traditional vanilla and oak for the finish with a touch of cinnamon spice. 91/100. -
Excellent bourbon. This one makes my top shelf for sure. On the nose, on top of the rye and oak, I get oranges, cherries, a hint of thyme and maybe even a little roasted pork, which sounds weird but smells delicious. On the palate, I get a lot of oak, but a matured oak, fruit, a little vanilla, and fresh baked bread. I'd rate this a 93/100.

Basil has a light and pleasant nose to it with notes of rye, pancakes, mint and oak. Pleasant but nothing special. The palate is pretty simplistic to me. I don't get much else outside of peppery rye. Definitely worthy of keeping a bottle on hand but only slightly above average for my rating. 84/100.

Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye
Canadian — Manitoba, Canada
Reviewed January 7, 2016 (edited April 24, 2018)I am a bourbon guy and don't care a whole bunch for most ryes. That being said, I find this to be an excellent whiskey. I'm not sure that I would rate this the best in the world this year, but it is an excellent offering from the folks at Crown Royal. On the nose, you definitely pick up the rye notes. I also get a sweet fruit smell. Someone described it as juicy fruit gum. I think that is spot on. On the palate, this one is fairly light. The rye burn hits immediately followed by a light oak. Not overly complicated. Tastes pretty young if you ask me. Is this good. Yeah. Is it a great value for $35. Yeah. Whiskey of the year. Meh.... -
1792 Ridgemont Reserve Bourbon 8 Year
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 5, 2016 (edited October 4, 2017)1792 is in my everyday supper rotation. Great bourbon and a great value. On the nose, I get notes of oak, leather, cinnamon, and rye. On the palate, the oak and leather come through in a spicy kind of way - a red spice but not too hot. Overall, this is a fine bourbon. -
Larceny Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 4, 2016 (edited January 21, 2016)One of my daily sippers. I try to always have a bottle of Larceny on the shelf. Not the best bourbon around, but it is definitely good. I get mostly maple syrup and bread in the nose. Maybe with a touch of banana The palate is sweet with flavor of caramel, maple and oak with some citrus in the background. Again, not very complex, but a solid everyday sipper. I suggest not adding more than a drop or two of water if you have to.
