The aroma has warming undertones that makes it feel welcoming right from the start. There is some sweetness to the aroma, like a sweet chocolate and butterscotch. Nice amber color as well. On the palate the sweetness continues with some cinnamon and caramel, and an essence of a chocolate-dipped churro. A little bit of spice and some vegetal notes too. The biggest weakness is that it is missing flavorful punch. Wish I could taste this at cask strength, because it tastes watered down.

Balvenie Single Barrel Sherry Cask 15 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed November 3, 2021Very nice dram. Pretty reddish color, nice and full. Flavor is full, rich, and spicy. Some raisin, Christmas spices, orange peel, and syrup flavors. Very warming mouthfeel, lingering finish. -
Really great whiskey if you find yourself in the mood for sherry influence, or even a general sweetness. It’s exceptionally smooth for a presumably very young whiskey, and has an amazingly dark mahogany color. Almost tastes like a fortified wine on its own, given the degree of sherry influence. Really strong aroma is immediately present upon opening the bottle. Obviously the sherry influence gives a lot of flavors of dried cherries, dried cranberries, raisins, and other dried fruit flavors, alongside some hints of nuttiness, spices, and vanilla. Really rich flavor, definitely a go-to for sherry casks.

Really nice dram. The cask strength gives some nice kick, but it feels much lighter than it is, and it’s surprisingly drinkable. It’s much lighter bodied and colored than the 16 for instance. The nose is floral, smoky, smoldering, a bit oceanic, and has some fruitiness. Pleasant flavor with some sweetness, a lot of oily texture and taste, some ash, and spice.

Kirkland 23 Year Speyside Single Malt Sherry Cask Finish
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed February 24, 2021Nice scotch, great value for the age. Beautifully rich color, it’s a nice stained wood color. Lots of sherry flavor and a good bit of charred wood. Some dried fruit and cherry aromas. The finish is sort of flat, a bit of a weakness of the dram. -
This is okay, but not great. A far cry from the richness, complexity, and power of the 16 and the Distiller’s Edition, but it does carry typical Lagavulin characteristics. Very light straw color is indicative of the lightness in aroma and flavor. The aroma is pretty light, not very concentrated. Along with some open smoke and peat, there’s saltiness and maritime aromas, a little tea, and some apples. Palate is also a little watery, but it has some herbs, nondescript fruits, and of course a noticeable amount of peat.

Casa Dragones Sipping Tequila Joven
Tequila Joven — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed January 30, 2021Very smooth, nice and easy to drink. In all aspects, it’s quite fresh. Pretty aroma of citrus skin and grass with some pepper and sea salt. Really pure water, nice and fresh. Flavor has some nice citrus fruits like clementine, a good bit of nuttiness, a hint of pear, and a lot of mint on the finish. -
Great whisky for peat lovers. Aroma is really powerful of campfire smoke and a bit of iodine. Top of the charts smoky and peaty, it’s really a delight. But, there’s more than just peat, there’s a decent complexity of flavors. There’s some dried fruit (apricot and others), some spice a little reminiscent of the Spice Tree, a bit of citrus tang, and of course lots and lots of peat. Good amount of char and smoke, but the smoke comes through a little more on the nose than the palate.

Compass Box The Story of the Spaniard
Blended Malt — Scotland
Reviewed January 3, 2021 (edited January 15, 2021)Good flavor but I get a strange smell. I do get the aromatic hints characteristic of sherry casks, but the first smell I get every time is that of garlic Parmesan shrimp scampi, which is not an aroma I particularly hope to get from a scotch. That being said, the flavor is pretty rich, with lots of sherry influence. Rich in dried fruits – some raisins, prunes, fruit wine, and honey.
