  • Kirkland London Dry Gin

    One of Kirkland's best spirit buys, along with their Blanco Tequila. It's just a tad strong for sipping, but it stands up very well mixed with vermouth or tonic. For flavor, it resembles Beefeater. Beefeater is a bit smoother; Kirkland is a bit more floral. Some have compared Kirkland's to Gordon's, but I find Gordon's a bit harsh by comparison. If you're mostly using gin for mixed drinks, this is an excellent, cost-effective choice. The bottle shape looks a lot like Costco's Bombay Sapphire 1.75 liter, however it's made by DC Flynt MW Selections, who makes Kirkland's Tennessee Bourbon and several of their wines.

    Absolutely spice cabinet heaven, a must for a Lion's Tail. But $30/375 ml? After 2 bottles of St. Elizabeth's, I learned that allspice dram is an easy DIY.

    The only commercial falernum that matters. Subtler than orgeat, Velvet Falernum elevates tiki cocktails. Excellent with dark rum.

    Has a pleasant sweetness, but seems a tad rough. Somewhat 'fumey', and can stand out sharply in cocktails. For the price, Beefeater's a better player as a mixer.

    Strongly herbal, with coriander a prominent note. This unique gin mixes best with ice. Limited availability in the U.S. Sipsmith fans will appreciate Bertha's.

    Clove, allspice, hints of cardamom. Mellow and somewhat sweet, this old Czech recipe is a lovely representative of fernet, and a great contrast to Branca.
