North Star Vega 22 year old
Blended Malt — Scotland
Reviewed October 30, 2020 (edited November 1, 2020)(Good Spirits Co. Glasgow - Ralfy & North Star Virtual Whisky Tasting 30 October 2020. On behalf of MacMillan Cancer Support charity). 6th edition 1 of 1,205 bottles Distilled 1997 Bottled in July 2019 I had tasted this at a previous GSC tasting and had made the following notes which still cover it for me: The nose is black pepper and wet earth. On the palate, toffee caramel, soy sauce, chewy fruit (prunes?!?). There’s a fruitiness that’s reminders me of cognac and has a mild numbing effect. The finish is lightly tannic, with some black pepper and more light, sweet sherry. Very easy to drink! Came 5th out of the six whiskies, with 2% (1 vote) of the final vote for favourite of the night.84.95 GBP per BottleThe Good Spirits Co. -
Nose: Smoky, sweet, salt/brine, TCP/medicinal Palate: Smoky, creamy, port/wine, juicy red fruit, there's a funky 'damp basement' note which is rather 'odd' Finish: Long finish, mostly smoke and a little salt. Still residual 'funk' from the earthy flavours. This is a weird whisky! It's not a bad whisky, but it has a chewiness that is just, well, odd! I'm glad to have tried it, but I wouldn't rush out to buy a bottle.48.23 GBP per Bottle

Nose: Fruity, green cooking herbs (thyme and tarragon) Palate: Citrus, apple, vanilla and oak Finish: Medium spicy finish, pepper This is an OK whisky. It's a little bland and ordinary, but it tastes like what it is - a reasonable, decent quality blend. Nothing special, but not offensive.29.9 GBP per Bottle

TINCUP American Whiskey
Other Whiskey — Indiana (bottled in Colorado), USA
Reviewed October 30, 2020 (edited November 1, 2020)Nose: Sweet, buttery, bready, oak and vanilla. A hint of floral and perfume. Palate: Banana, vanilla, light and spicy, cherry. A little waxy. Finish: Liquorice, very light smoke, lingering spice. There is a nice creamy mouthfeel, very smooth, but a slight hotness on the initial taste. It's a little too sweet for my palate, but I did enjoy it as a dram.30.95 GBP per Bottle -
Bunnahabhain Toiteach A Dhà
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed October 30, 2020 (edited March 21, 2021)Nose: Fruit and smoke Palate: Salty fish (?), dried fruits and raisins, smooth dark chocolate Finish: Stewed prunes and dates, pepper, campfire smoke, dry tannic There is a slightly firey, young note to this whisky. It's not uncommon for Bunnahabhain's NAS editions to have this same note, but it's fairly prominent in this edition. It's still a nice dram, but a little young seeming to be a stand out from their range.41.0 GBP per Bottle -
Glenallachie 2008 10 Year Benchmark - Casks 180845 & 181845 (Murray McDavid)
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed October 30, 2020Nose: Dark cherries, raisin, orange, allspice, icing sugar Palate: Sherry, bitter dark chocolate, cherries, Christmas cake, cloves Finish: Spicy, long finish, pudding wine I was sent a sample of this to taste by a friend. Wow, I was not expecting the quality and layers of flavour. Very obviously sherried but the PX really makes it stand out. This is a very lovely and easy to drink dram. I may have to look out for a bottle!60.95 GBP per Bottle -
Nose: Orange, ash/smoke Palate: Honey, peat smoke, wood, sweet vanilla, umami (salt/MSG) Finish: Short/medium finish. Delicate, orange and slightly medicinal This is a well balanced and easy to drink dram. There are a few layers of flavour, but my overall impression is that it has been over engineered. It's just a little boring. Not bad, but not that interesting either.34.95 GBP per Bottle

Nose: Campfire, salt/brine, fresh fruit Palate: Creamy, oily, liquorice, peat smoke, cured/dried meat, cocoa Finish: Long finish. Chillies, sweet vanilla, pepper, caramel, citrus/lemon This is a very easy whisky to drink. The first slips down before you've even noticed and with it's 46% it can be quite a dangerous bottle to open. It is a very drying whisky and you'll quickly notice the tannic finish. Worth keeping a glass of water to hand, or if you are having a number of them, make sure to have a large glass before bed - your future self will thank you! I don't typically put water in my whisky, but this is one that benefits from a drop or two - just don't flood it!33.9 GBP per Bottle
