A taste on New Year’s Eve at Eric’s house. Outside in the near 0 degree temps. This was a nice time to taste this. It nosed with sweet sherry, apricot, honey, heather and peat. The body was medium and the flavors hit on the nose. The finish was medium to long and smokey. A very fine whiskey that had me thinking a little less smokey springbank 15. This was really very very good.

Russell's Reserve 13 Year Bourbon (2021 Release)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 29, 2021 (edited February 28, 2022)Nose: a touch of turkey funk which I feel is like a toasted almond. Chocolate, caramel, vanilla. Baking spices and cinnamon. Later a soft floral aroma wafted out. Later the chocolate and cinnamon really dominated. Body: medium to full Palate: very chocolatey, cinnamon spice, apricot/sherry Finish: medium to long. Note: excited for this bottle which I overpaid for at auction. -
Nose: fruit (raspberry or other red berry - this really dominates the nose), caramel, vanilla, chocolate, baking spice. Body: medium to full Palate: leather, caramel, vanilla, again the red fruits but this time with some smoke. Finish: medium to long. I got the Tennessee whiskey orange starburst sneaking out on the finish. That was fun. Note: last taste from Jared. I’m interested in this whiskey given what I’ve heard. This is really good. I’m impressed by this and the widow Jane 15.

Nose: sea salt caramel, peat, sherry (fruity), faint honey, toasted almond Body: medium Palate: sea salt caramel, sherry, honey. The nose and the palate line up nearly exactly. Finish: crazy crazy crazy long finish. Smokey, Salty, caramel, Note: another taste from Jared. Of course given the HP 18 is my favorite scotch this is likely to be up there as a top single malt for me. This is tasted neat. This is a very refined single malt. Extremely easy to drink, no pepper. The sweetness kicks this off with a wonderful smokey sea salt caramel that just lingers forever. This is exquisite.

Widow Jane The Vaults 15 Year Bourbon (2021 Release)
Bourbon — USA
Reviewed December 27, 2021 (edited January 1, 2022)Nose: oak, almond, caramel, cherry, vanilla, fruity and chocolatey. Body: medium Palate: oak, vanilla, caramel, chocolate, Finish: oooh a real nice lingering chocolatey finish. So good. Note: a sample from Jared. I’ve got a bottle and we will see about opening it. Delicious. -
Nose: a little funk. Milk chocolate. Almond. Oak. I think the funk is actually a toasted almond aroma. Vanilla. As it breathed the funk gave way for more orange creamsicle. Marshmallow. Body: medium Palate: rye spice, almond again, toast. Finish: medium to long. Wafts or orange bubble up for a long while. Note: a taste from Jared. Going rye tonight. Michters toasted barrel, Kentucky Owl. Now this… let’s see how this goes. Huh. I like this better than the Kentucky owl 11 year rye and the michters toasted barrel rye. But the toasted barrel is second. But this rye whiskey is the best of the night

Eagle Rare Single Barrel Select (1010 Washington)
Bourbon — USA
Reviewed December 22, 2021 (edited October 14, 2022)Nose: lots of caramel, a touch of oak and vanilla. A little mint later Body: light Palate: the classic vanilla, caramel and a little cherry soda Finish: medium Note: 1010 Washington has been making great picks this year so obviously this is my favorite go to bourbon for the price. I’m excited to taste. Aaaand it doesn’t disappoint. This is just a solid work horse of a bourbon. The price is right and it can play with any of the big boys. -
Nose: vanilla, toasted oak, Caramel, brown sugar Body: light and watery Palate: cinnamon starts, cherry, vanilla, toasted oak Finish: medium to long with the smoke I like. Toasted oak smoke. Very nice. Note: I like this significantly more than last years version. It’s a classic bourbon but the tastes are deep and lingering. It’s excellent.

2005 diageo special release. 6000 bottles. I got an ounce from jared. This is tasted neat. Nose: honey, sherry, light malty aroma. Candle wax and toasted hazelnut. Later salty sea breeze. A touch of ethanol broke through later. Touch of citrus fruit Body: full, explodes on the tongue like the nose just animates from 2D to 3D. Palate: initial impression is there is a lot gong on. Smoky caramelized hazelnut with sherry, and honey on top. The taste really hold true to the nose and is great. No heat at all. A little light white pepper up front but so mild and it disappears so fast you almost miss it. But if I had to sum this up I’d say sweet caramel and smoke. Finish: long, smoky and malty. Lingers forever … this is the perfect finish. The tastes like it noses and is wonderful. The smoky finish is terrific. Note: I won some bourbon at an auction and got some fun 1 ounce samples as a surprise. I’m looking forward to this. No expectations. One sip and I knew this was really good. From the nose you really have no idea how long this is going to linger on the finish it just never ends.
