Someone brought this to a one year old’s birthday party… I said I love it, and he said “keep the bottle.” Its already open, and I’m not checking a bag so no way to bring it back. Guess I’m drinkin it now! Aged in oak but with the gentlest hint of color. None really to taste though. On the nose is soapier than i recall, but a fine juice altogether. Super smooth, easy to sip. Light on the vegetal, nonexistent funk (as would be expected.) This is Smugglers Cove SF, Ca in a bottle.Wai Wai Cumbuco Eco Residence

I came to Brazil to Live, Laugh, Cachaça. Of that, my success rate was 33%, which would be good enough to get into the MLB Hall of Fame. This is the first bottle I stole for myself. The oak coloration was not expected, and doesnt impart much but chills the whole endeavor out. A neat sip in a plastic cup is an unexpected adventure. It’s got soap and pepper in all the right places. Its mild, but not obnoxiously so. I don’t know how to describe it. In the US we’re missing out on having this as a staple.Direção Hidráulica Lourin: Oficina Direção Elétrica, Oficina Direção Hidráulica, Fortaleza

Grangestone 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed January 5, 2024 (edited February 5, 2026)Feels like scotch in training, oddly young and missing the sweet maltiness. On the nose, you expect something other than what shows up on the pallete. Hit it with a shard of ice and it immediately freaks out… then raisin emerges, then tannin, followed by industrial solvent. -
St. Rémy Signature Brandy
Other Brandy — France
Reviewed December 22, 2023 (edited December 23, 2023)The color makes me wonder if we have some caramel coloring in the mix. Purchased a couple bottles of this for a clarified milk punch. My initial taste and the reviews of others are reassuring signs that this’ll make for a fine punch. Definitely has that raisin wine telltale brandy taste. Still, a bit tannic in general, but only enough that I’d be the one griping about it. I guess this is an attempt to buck the lousy reputation brandy has among young folk. In general, not bad. Especially since most places are limited in brandy options.30.0 USD per BottleSafeway -
Depressingly pale, we got this as a low risk filler to a Waterford crystal decanter that wouldn’t break the bank or be a shame to oxidize. The nose is all the best qualities of a beautiful malt. The palette is a confusing one: numbing on the tip of the tongue, frenetic ups and downs of tannins and conflicting notes. Oddly enjoyable but would be disappointing to pay for at typical bar upcharge prices. Otherwise, no regrets but not wildly inspiring either.

Kavalan Solist Oloroso Sherry Single Cask Strength
Single Malt — Taiwan
Reviewed January 28, 2023 (edited January 30, 2023)Bought mine in Taiwan, so worth noting mine is a 58.6% bottle. Damn. I love single malt. People in Taiwan sleep on Kavalan. They think it’s lesser quality because it isn’t from the UK. Friendly people, very polite… but wrong about Kavalan. It is excellent. Deep amber hue. Nose is sweet and complex. Syrupy, tropical and rich. Actually smells like money. Like a crisp clean $100 bill. Tip of the tongue is almost maple. Sweet oily mouthfeel. Rich and complex, it’s a cop out to site tropical fruits because it comes from a literal tropical island. This is more a deep refreshing apple juice. Oak bites your soft palette so bite it back. This sip punishes you for rushing. Take your time and it rewards you. The water here is interesting… Taiwan’s water appears to be among the best and worst in the world. My hotel warned against drinking tap water. I’m a tap water aficionado and scoffed at this.. that is until I was informed that a globally recognized testing operation found elevated levels of arsenic in it… which explains the copious bottles of water that would appear daily. At that point I learned the bottled water was free. It the mountains it is a different story. And I believe it. I personally like the contrast. It’s a lot like Taiwan, beautiful but precarious. At any rate, try this.129.0 USD per BottleKaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts -
Taiwan has a thriving convenience store scotch culture. People here love their single malt. Picked this up on a whim and it’s not offensive or remarkable. Twist the cap and the nose assaults you from across the room. Everything about this screams “booze that wants to convince you it’s a booze” or at least “take me serious.” I don’t know what’s on the nose. Booze? Maybe a sneaky hint of licorice. Palette hints with herbs and dime store potpourri. It sounds like a cut, but it’s not. This bottle is fine. The price is right. Nice to have on hand in the hotel.4.5 USD per Bottle7-ELEVEN 松高門市
