Del Maguey Chichicapa Mezcal
Mezcal Joven — Oaxaca, Mexico
Reviewed October 5, 2020 (edited January 30, 2021)Perfect entry point to high end mezcal. I first experienced it as a recommended base for a delicious cocktail the "Naked and Famous", but when I bit the bullet on the bottle to bring the cocktail to a Halloween party, I couldn't help but taste the true spirit, and the journey it took me on is unforgettable. Minty fresh citrus and gingerbread/cinnamon nose (I've noticed variability between bottles for the gingerbread note) precede a briny and oceanic body followed by a wet mineral finish with a backbone of smoke. Totally unique, especially at the seemingly high price.68.0 USD per Bottle -
High West Rendezvous Rye
Rye — (bottled in) Utah, USA
Reviewed October 5, 2020 (edited November 14, 2020)My ideal every day sipper. I first tried it in an admittedly impressionable state (just bought a new car, on my way to see friends who would soon move away), but something about the balance in the nose and the darkness and complexity in the finish set it apart from other rotgut MGP ryes. I wish it was $5 cheaper than it is, but I've been chasing higher end ryes to find a similar deep, dark black cherry almost savory finish but have consistently come up short. Entirely lives up to the corny cowboy branding, imo.55.0 USD per Bottle -
Darker and richer in the traditional "rum flavors" than the 2007 edition, which I appreciate although '07 is great in its own right. Try it uncut and with dilution to fully appreciate. I add 1 tsp. filtered water to 1 fl oz for a 101 proof dilution that goes down the hatch for the full throated finish much more nicely. Maybe even go down to 90 proof with 2 tsp water without too much loss if that's too hot.99.0 USD per Bottle

This isn't the sanitized kind of top shelf mezcal like certain DM offerings (which I also love), this is high grade Oaxacan white lightning. It's hot and somewhat blurry in its evolution. That said, it grows on you with the evolution from the yellow-green sweet nose (banana bubblegum in almost a toluene enriched race fuel way) to the dusty baked earth note hiding under the soft green grassy finish. I always find I want another taste even after being burned by the heat. Distilled by a great man, Aquilino García López, rest his gifted soul. Lot A-18-C-18 Distilled Sept. 201885.0 USD per Bottle

Del Maguey Wild Jabali
Mezcal Joven — Oaxaca, Mexico
Reviewed October 5, 2020 (edited July 20, 2021)Very interesting contrast between the nose (relatively dark and savory-sweet-smoky) and the taste which is relatively bright and herbal-spicy. Gentle heat gives way to a zesty finish of savory green herbs (basil/tarragon) and black pepper spice. If you know you like DM's approach to mezcal, and the descriptors sound appealing, worth a blind buy.99.0 USD per Bottle
