Non-age statement single malt from hakushu. Bright apple, orange, fresh timber, new leather, and hints of nuts and cacao on the nose. The palate is thick, warm and smooth, with a more middle tone feel compared to the brighter feel of the nose. Leans more towards caramel and toffee flavours, with dried fruits and spices. Finish is sharp with spicy tones. Non-age statement but an excellent whisky.

Nose: smoky and wild, with charcoal and salty, smoked ham or bacon. Hints of apple, straw, tree sap, and oddly enough, carrot. Palate: thick and oily, with a very pronounced salt and umami profile. Bitter chocolate, and hints of sweetness. Old pine furniture. Finish: quite long and lingering as the oiliness takes time to dissipate.

Grangestone Highland Single Malt Bourbon Cask Finish
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed May 25, 2022 (edited November 8, 2024)Sweet and spicy on the nose. White pepper, rubber, fresh almonds, raisins and dried fruit that reminds me of Dundee cake. Faint hints of chocolate and citrus. Very smooth, soft on the palate. Balanced, with few outstanding flavours. Overall a slightly sweet, spiced whisky, like dried fruits and nuts. Absolutely pleasant, but nothing particularly unique or extraordinary. -
The nose is bright lemon and citrus mingles with deep sweetness of honey and dried fruits. Oak, leather and white pepper. The palate is smooth and nutty, with bitter dark chocolate. Plums and prunes provide a sweet feel, with baking spices. More oak and leather towards the end. Finish is thick, slightly oily, and sweet like brown sugar and caramel.

N: lots going on. Apple and pear-like fruit notes, accompanied by sweet honey, a richer butter note, vanilla, and also featuring whiffs of lavender, and something like new rubber tyres or a carpet store. P: much smoother than the nose would suggest, with more caramel and toffee notes. The fruit is more like stewed fruit, like apple pie. Features almonds or marzipan, and hints of buttered toast. F: not so long, but pleasing and refreshing with lingering pear. Very drinkable, with a good, varied yet balanced profile. Hard to get tired of this quickly.

SmokeStack Blended Malt Scotch Whisky
Blended Malt — Highlands, Islay, Scotland
Reviewed March 5, 2022N: definite peat and smoke, but not as much nor as intense as I was expecting. Hint of fruity peach. P: smoke and peat are rather mellow. Features dried fruits and deep sweet and pepper notes. F: a rather short lived, dry extension of the palate. Overall quite tasty, but feels a little lacking in character and one dimensional. -
N: light and misty. Some gentle peat, spicy pepper, salty seaside air, something like rose, and a hint of cacao P: apple and orchard fruits, some more light peat and salt, milk chocolate. F: vanilla and chocolate, but on the medium short side. Delightful. The gentle sweetness, light peat and smoke, subtle fruit make this an elegant and refined dram

The Glenrothes 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed March 5, 2022 (edited August 17, 2022)Nose: apple, caramel, vanilla, and something like wildflowers or grassy meadows. Fresh, fruity and slightly sweet. Palate: quite sweet, plenty of vanilla, caramel, almonds. Light and fruity. Finish: medium, leaving behind fruity peach and nectarine, and milk chocolate. A bit too sweet for me, but good as a dessert style whisky. -
Ardnamurchan AD/09.20:01
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed January 28, 2022 (edited March 13, 2022)10.21:06 expression. Lovely aromas, with fruity apple, orange and citrus, with a goodly amount of peat and salt. The peat is not overbearing though. Remains light in the palate as well, with good salty umami, leading into more deep sweetness of dried fruits. I love this
