Lohin McKinnon Chocolate Malt Single Malt Whisky
Single Malt — British Columbia, Canada
Reviewed July 13, 2019Dark, earthy, rich nose. Buttery palate, with tons of roasted malt that melts into a dark chocolate finish. Like a slightly burnt, sweetened butter. Lots of dried fruits, and a little baking spice too. My favourite of the Lohin McKinnon malts! -
Lohin McKinnon Tequila Barrel Finished Single Malt Whisky
Canadian — British Columbia, Canada
Reviewed July 13, 2019 (edited November 8, 2019)This malt is funky and fun, luscious on the palate with agave and bright vegetal notes pairing with malt sweetness. Totally unique, and pretty great. -
Lohin McKinnon Wine Barrel Finished Single Malt
Single Malt — British Columbia, Canada
Reviewed July 13, 2019The youngness of this malt is the most apparent of Lohin McKinnon's whiskys. It's fairly ethanol forward, which is unfortunate because it has some really interesting earthy and wine tannin flavours. It just didn't hold up so well against the lovely luscious texture of their other malts in a flight. -
Highland Park 12 Year Viking Honour
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed July 2, 2019 (edited September 21, 2019)I think this is a really great balance between sherry sweetness, brine, some herbal notes, and the tiniest bit of peat. I bet I would love it at a higher proof... alas it's still a treat at 43%. The first bottle of scotch I ever bought still holds up as it nears empty. -
On the nose, this was very similar to how I remembered Buffalo Trace. Very corn forward, but with an added depth from the barrel. On the taste though, totally different. Very oak forward, though not lots of tannins. It also had this sour and astringent note... I'm not sure if it was just the the bottle I tasted from, or just how I was feeling at the moment, but I found it off-putting. Or maybe it was just not what I was expecting--i didn't get the fruitiness other tasters described. Maybe I'll just have to try it again another day...
