At a hundred bucks a bottle and being so rare in the USA, I can’t help but wish this cognac was a bit more exciting. It’s got a pleasant light fruity taste and aroma, but the heavy alcohol burn makes it feel kind of...cheap somehow. As a brandy fan I truly like it and savor every sip but I’m not sure I’ll buy it again. It’s something nice to have experienced, but nothing makes it stand out all that much besides its apparent rarity.

Kraken Black Spiced Rum Original
Spiced Rum — Trinidad & Tobago
Reviewed December 14, 2018 (edited February 15, 2023)Very good stuff. Molasses-focused, heavy on the spices too. I was looking for just this type of black rum and I was lucky enough to find it on my first attempt. One word of caution: do NOT have it on the rocks by itself. I don’t know what I was thinking. It went from pleasant molasses to burnt plastic. No redeeming qualities when it’s on the rocks. Otherwise, if you’re not a dummy like me, it’s a nice rich rum. -
For some, this rum might be a tad too cloyingly sweet and a little heavy on the chocolate-orange notes. For me, I’ve been serving it up in a warm glass here and there this winter and it’s actually been quite nice. It’s not your average rum, and that might be good or bad depending on what you want out of a drink. Mixing with coke saves me the effort of adding any curaçao or anything because it’s got that citrus sweetness already. Hey, maybe it’s just meant to be a wintertime drink.

I’ve always found it difficult to enjoy Jameson outside of coffee because I tend to prefer punchier whiskies, so when I saw this on the shelf I was imagining the optimal Jameson. I was very wrong and kind of feel misled a bit. There’s a DIFFERENCE between the Caskmates version and regular ol’ Jameson, but it’s very difficult to get any hops out of the stuff. It’s essentially a slightly more spicy, sharper Jameson. If you like Jameson, you’re not going to be disappointed. If you’re like me, I don’t think you’ll be finding something new from this style.

Hawaiian Moonshine Okolehao
Other Sugarcane — Hawaii, USA
Reviewed December 14, 2018 (edited December 16, 2018)Okolehao isn’t made on a wide scale outside of this single product that also happens to be relatively rare, which I can certainly appreciate. It’s got a distinct vegetal taste, almost like some kind of drinkable aftershave—that’s better than it may sound. Think of Chartreuse. One problem I have is that the finish has a very intense burn to go along with the ti root taste. Haven’t tried using it in a mixed drink yet but I imagine it’ll be hard to find a balance between the very in-your-face alcohol, the subtle vegetal flavor, and whatever you’re mixing it with. -
Crown Royal Deluxe
Canadian — Manitoba, Canada
Reviewed December 14, 2018 (edited December 15, 2018)There’s something off-putting about Crown Royal’s taste, almost like it seems unfocused. It’s just kind of bland. Couple that with a too-oily mouthfeel and I can’t see the draw of Crown.
