Sonoma County Distilling Co. Cherrywood Rye Whiskey (Batch #1)
Rye — California, USA
Reviewed October 30, 2018 (edited February 26, 2022)I love this stuff. From nose to finish, it's so different. There is a solid amount of flavour and complexity. Cherrywood smoked barley is amazing, the rye brings a good amount of spice and flavour to the party. The blend of grains create a really balanced taste. It's slightly astringent, but that doesn't take away from it at all. This bottle is one of my top 3 favourites. -
Lot No. 40 11 Year Cask Strength
Canadian — Ontario, Canada
Reviewed October 30, 2018 (edited December 21, 2018)Bold, spicy, full of flavour and complexity. This is the rye other ryes want to be. I love the bite from the higher abv. Buy this if you find it for a good price. -
It's earthy and complex in all the right ways. The mash bill provides a nice balance. Toasted woody tannins, rye spiciness, and some sweetness from the corn and wheat... I really like this! It's bold and can easily hang with some of those really good mid-range bourbons. I'm a fan of drinking my whisky neat from a Glencairn glass, but I have to imagine this stuff would lend well to a nice classic cocktail. For the price, you can't go wrong. If you see it, get it.

To be honest, my very first thought upon sipping was "this is what mould tastes like". It is earthy - to a fault. Sure, there is some sweetness and vanilla on the palate, but it just gets lost in dank, astringent, 'mouldy' bitterness. Don't let the mild nose fool you... All that being said, it did eventually grow on me. It started as a very disappointing one star, but now that I've finished the bottle, I'm comfortable raising the rating to a two. This may be the perfect whisky for someone who likes bitter, earthy, not-so-complex sipping. But I dont reckon I'd buy it again.33.0 CAD per Bottle
