Talisker 10 Year
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed January 18, 2020 (edited January 19, 2020)OK...a little harsh. My taste seems to gravitate to more mild finishes. -
Absolutely, a great sipping whisky. The strong peaty, smoky first sniff just mellows out with each subsequent nip. I'm not a guzzler.....have recently recognized the indescribable attractiveness of an extended visit with a dram of good Scotch. Bucket list entry: visit Islay and tour as many distilleries as possible! Thanks Scotland!

Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed January 18, 2020 (edited May 6, 2020)Don't know what I can say except that Jim McEwan became a 'friend' after I viewed the delightful and informative Amazon documentary entitled, "Scotch, a Golden Dream". Coincidentally, I'd just returned from a visit to Edinburgh that featured a side trip to tour the Deanston distillery, not far from the city. I never got to the Highlands or Islands, but I'm hopeful that some day not too far off, I may get to do that. For the past year or two, this 71-year old, former hippie has joyfully discovered the pleasures and sensual attractiveness of single malt whisky. I've begun to sample offerings from the different regions, and even my unsophisticated nose/palate/brain can appreciate the subtle differences and remarkable qualities of this wonderful creation. Anyway, after having acquired a handful or two of 'entry level' whiskies (i.e., those costing less than $60), I just had to try 'the Laddie', and see for myself what Jim was talking about. All I can say is "WOW!". Bruichladdich Blue Bottle is now my 'gold standard'. Can't wait to compare it to other single malt offerings; but for now.....I have nothing but praise for the smooth, delicate, and amazingly gentle punch this distillate offers. Thank you Jim, thank you Scotland, and good luck to you at Ardnahoe.55.0 USD per Bottle -
WhistlePig The Boss Hog Straight Rye Whiskey
Rye — (Bottled In) Vermont, Canada
Reviewed January 18, 2020 (edited May 29, 2022)I guess you'd need to like the sweetness of rye whiskey to really appreciate this one. I've lately become greatly enamored of single malt Scotch, and sincerely appreciate the mildness of the taste and the subtlety of the finish, including the peaty varieties of Scotch whisky. My kids permitted me a taste of this very exclusive offering and I agree that it goes down with a good deal of character. I'm no expert, but there's something much more gentle in the clarity of Scotch versus the candy-like taste of rye whiskey.
