Highland Park 12 Year Viking Honour
Single Malt — Islands, Scotland
Reviewed April 26, 2018 (edited September 21, 2019)Appearance: A nice glowing golden amber Nose: the smell reminds me very much of a typical highland whiskey. Very aromatic with honey and floral notes abound, I get a touch of smoke and salt air, with a very faint citrus. Very balanced and a whiskey I could sniff for quite some time. WATER adds a Licorice note Palate: The depth continues on the tongue. at first you get a nice sweetness of a syrup, but it quickly dissolves away to an almost sour tangy note with sharp edges of wood and peat smoke, but all the while I'm getting dried fruit notes of pineapple and smoked Orange rind. WATER brings some more honey to the front Finish: The finish is quite long. You've been warned. Iodine and smoke that fades away to a long lasting pepper and saw wood shavings WATER: smooths out the finish blending the flavors a little better. -
Auchentoshan The Bartender's Malt
Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland
Reviewed April 12, 2018 (edited March 9, 2020)Well I have to say that I got sold, I went into the store looking for a very limited not yet delivered bourbon and walked out with a single malt ... ok so the boax was pretty and had some buzz words and being that I'm in sales I appreciate the effort. Appearance: a light golden amber with a tint of green notes Nose: at bottle strength I get Apriocots and honey and floral notes that are very inviting. Add some water and I get some more earth notes, the box calls this the green tobacco leaves so I'll say sure that must be it. Palate: This is a very young single malt not as complex up front, lots of zest and citrus like an IPA, add a bit of water to cut back on the harshness of the high proof, and it balances out with some sweet floral and buttery notes. Finish: This whisky likes to linger with some peper and wood notes coming out that seem to be missing from the rest of the experiance but they last so long it balances out in the end. I bought this for $46 bucks and I mean the box labels these 12 master bartenders that contributed as the new malt order so I guess for the way things are going to be done moving forward this is a solid whisky.
