Likely undeservedly, I've had a bad association with Johny Walker, though I've not yet thoroughly explored why. It turns out, at least from this entry point to the brand, that I might have been a bit hasty. This was delicious. Smooth, but also with nice challenging notes and a bit more smoke than I was expecting. I kept coming back to this pretty regularly, so think this earns a quite good rating.

Grangestone Highland Single Malt Bourbon Cask Finish
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed July 17, 2024 (edited November 8, 2024)Not a fan of this. I can taste the burbon, which I'm not happy about. This struggles to be a Scotch for me. -
Vila Das Rainhas Ginja D'Obidos Wild Cherry Liqueur
Fruit Liqueurs — Portugal, Portugal
Reviewed July 17, 2024This is traditionally found sold in small market stalls in Lisbon, served out of small edible chocolate cups. The liquor on its own is sweet and very intense, however when paired with the chocolate this becomes quite the experience. Highly recommend, but only if you can do it right. -
I've never been a big fan of glenfiddich. What I will say though is that the oakiness here was very nice. I found this improved significantly with a couple of whiskey cubes to cool it slightly, but even then, there's just something about it that doesn't quite work for me. Enjoyable tasting, probably wouldn't buy though.

Calirosa Añejo Tequila
Tequila Añejo — Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed July 14, 2024 (edited October 17, 2024)I really enjoyed this. It felt like it had notes of Mexican dark chocolate, with maybe just a bit of spice, chili or perhaps something milder, like black pepper. The sweetness was well tamped by the other flavors, and overall this was actually rather delightful. -
Going purely off of hte tasting notes, I definitely get the chocolate, and even some of the sweeter dried fruit notes. The oak is more of a dry mouth feel for me than something that was aggressively oaked, but its nice nonetheless. Despite this not being my usual whellhouse, I'm actually kind of feeling this one.

I'm not particularly versed on brand laws in Mexico, but I was under the impression it couldn't be called sotol outside of a few regions? Anyway, whatever, this is sotol, no matter what the branding people say. Sotol from Texas, no less. This was my first sotol, and I really quite enjoyed it. Less smoke than a Mezcal, more interesting than tequila. I got a lot of grass and soil, but in a nice way, and something spicy, maybe black pepper? Someone else on youtube said white pepper, but I don't think that's quite right. Additionally, there is some subtle smoke happening as well. All in all, I really enjoyed this.
