Batch: BRM 14-9 Date: 12-2-14. Finally found a couple of bottles in Austin and bought them to round out my Balcones collection. I have read several tasting notes on this iconic Texas whiskey and I both agree and disagree with the herd. The smoke does present in the nose, but not not before a strong statement of vanilla, brown sugar and black licorice . On the tip of the tongue its sweet. Sugar, vanilla, and licorice again Smoke is more present and a salty brine as it rolls to the middle of the tongue. The smoke comes to the forefront on the finish with sweet slightly burnt corn. After five minutes or so just trying to contemplate what I had just expierienced i realize that the licorice has never left, asking me to take another sip so that it may be balanced again.

The carameI is strong with this one.i give it 4 stars for the value it offers. The nose wafts caramel with honey and vanilla notes, and for my part im thinking just a hint of spice and raisin. The nose hides nothing and the pallet does nothing to surprise. It's not a bad thing. It starts with a serious sweetness. Caramel the corner stone again with honey and vanilla coming through. A slight bit of spice to reign the sweet. The finish is smooth and lingers with a nutty oak. This bourbon is good, and for the price should not be overlooked

Bought two bottles for New Years. One to keep and one to save for backstock. The nose rambunctious and full of candied fruits, flowers and honey with a fair anout of cinnamon and pepper to balance. On the pallet is initially quite sweet with the floral honey notes presenting early and carrying into the mid pallet, at this point I got a slightly sour taste less than ripe black berries that lasted for only milliseconds and then the anise, cinnamon, and truck load of pepper come in. Finish is smooth and balanced with none of the flavors leaving before the others have had their say. To sum it up in one word....it was a rumble. I recommend it neat, with a little water to get closer to those floral notes or for a spicy and sultry old fashioned!
