Tastes

The stout finish comes across in the nose as an almost tea-like scent which is very strong. There is a grassy note too. The taste is less pleasant for me, as someone who does not like many stouts. The same tea-like nose is present in the taste, and the whiskey flavor while muted is balanced. There is a clear sweetness where I notice some chocolate. Unfortunately that faded quickly leaving me with a long, long lasting tea/stout aftertaste. Not something I will drink again. If you like experimental whiskeys and stout it might be more up your alley. Note: Tasted as part of Drinks by the Dram Advent Calendar.

Sonoma Distilling Company Cherrywood Smoked Bourbon
Bourbon — California, USA
Reviewed December 8, 2019 (edited October 7, 2020)Enjoy the bold cherrywood and smoke hit with a smooth whiskey finish. -
This is a bold, nutty rye. I am lost how anyone could classify the initial flavor as subtle because it is more of a blast of nuttiness, that delightfully hits my palate today. It does not have the same balance as Bulleit 12 year rye or the variety of Peerless Humidor, but this is an incredibly tasty rye for the price point. I picked it up on sale for $26.

Peerless Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Rye "Humidor"
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed November 30, 2019While the nose does not stand up to the peppery bliss of Michters 10 year rye, this still delivers a warning of the fun to come. Once it hits your tongue you immediately catch a cross of sweet cocoa and smoke that morphs into a peppery burn as the nearly 115 proof whiskey says hello. I have had a lot of ryes, including three Peerless single barrels, and this stands with the likes of Kentucky Owl Batch 3 and Michters 10 year. Admittedly the later outdoes this for me with the unabashed flavor assault, but I bought two bottles of 'Humidor' because it's a unique, great drink for any rye fan.125.0 USD per Bottle -
West Fork Whsky Co. The Colonel Bourbon Whiskey
Bourbon — Indiana , USA
Reviewed November 30, 2019 (edited January 24, 2021)There might be bourbon here, but you won't be tasting it. This hits like they poured a cup of sugar into each bottle, and it has ruined what is left. Possibly the worst tasting "bourbon" I have had, because it really does not taste like one. -
Michter's US*1 Kentucky Straight Rye
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed November 30, 2019 (edited June 4, 2020)Strong Michters sweetness with a moderate pepper that you get off rye whiskey. Very good if inoffensive. Makes a great whiskey sour. -
