Basil Hayden Dark Rye
Other Whiskey — Multiple Countries
Reviewed February 1, 2020 (edited February 10, 2020)I had been looking at this bottle in my grocery for a while. Price dropped to $28, so I snagged it. Not knowing what to expect.... I dove in. The nose is sweet, with the definite hints of vanilla. The subtle rye spice hits as well. The palate is where it gets a bit interesting. The port comes through with its sweetness immediately. You get some oak and leather tones.... as well as dark fruits. It’s very palatable. It reminds me of something... and on the second taste, I place it. This literally reminds me of drinking a Manhattan. As you taste it, imagine it with a Luxardo cherry. The oil is there, and lingers on the aftertaste. I was pleasantly surprised with this pour. I will be keeping this stocked for a while -
Old Grand-Dad Bonded Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed November 23, 2019 (edited January 2, 2020)Nose: the orange notes and caramel tones are easily detected. Appearance: Honey/Amber Taste: it says “High Rye Mash Bill” right on the front, and it isn’t lying. The first taste hits you with the peppery rye. Combined with the 100 proof, it packs heat up front. But don’t let the heat turn you away. Go back for a 2nd and a 3rd sip. Once your mouth gets used to the 100 proof, the taste opens up for you. A sweet, caramel and burnt sugar tones are apparent up front, with the hint of orange zest people have talked about coming through. The finish is a medium bodied, oily finish that lingers. At the end of the taste, you pick up the oak notes. You really taste oak and dried fruit in the aftertaste At the price, it should be a daily sipper in everyone’s collection23.0 USD per BottleIndianapolis
